A large sterling silver locket from the Aesthetic Period, the cover decorated with an engraved Japonaiserie scene of a water bird landing among reeds. The bird is surrounded by a fan-shaped reserve. The ends of the locket are nicely enhanced with beading and a fancy border. The interior retains both original frames and glass enclosing either fabric. The back is unadorned. Extraordinary oil on wood panel painting depicting Native American thatched huts on an Arizona Indian Reservation. The coloring of the work is especially nice--with a predominance of amber, lavender, and yellow. The style is nearly impressionistic, particularly in the treatment of the background. The painting remains in its original giltwood frame. The backing paper bears two inscriptions in different hands, "Indian Reservation in Arizona--1920" and "Indian Reservation in Ariz From The Schultes 1920". Early images from the American West are extremely desirable, and those depicting Native American life are among the rarest.

Origin: America, 1920. The backing paper also has the original framer's label from the Annex Art Shop in Chicago, Ill.

Condition: original frame and backing paper (paper torn); blacklight examination reveals no inpainting, damage or repair. Size: framed, 15-1/2" x 11"; image size: 12-7/16" x 7-13/16". Extraordinarily high quality and desirable oil on wood panel painting depicting two circular huts with thatched roofs.

A very nice cut crystal cocktail shaker in amethyst overlay. The design is a classic pattern of angular mitres emanating from oval printies. These shakers were almost always acid-signed “Japan” on the base, but someone scratched out the signature on this one. Cut glass in the Art Deco style was one of the industries established in Japan during the occupation at the end of World War II. The products were of fine quality and easily competed with European glass from the era. This shaker is complete with its original chrome-plated top. These shakers were always acid-signed “Japan” on the base, but someone scratched out the signature on this shaker.

Origin: Japan, ca. 1947. Condition: excellent; no chips, cracks or dings. Dimensions: 10-3/4” tall.

This classic U.S. Navy ring is something of an oddity—it was custom-made in France! The ring is an older style with shoulders depicing an American eagle surmounting a stars and stripes shield over the letters “USN”. The crown is set with an oval cabochon of almandine garnet surrounded by the words “United States Navy,” the words separated by stars. The garnet has an intense deep red color that contrasts handsomely with the gold. The design elements of the ring suggest an early 20th century period. The shank is stamped with French 18K gold marks and also with an unidentified French goldsmith’s mark. The ring is hand-engraved, so was likely a custom order by an American gentleman from a Parisian jeweler.
  • Origin: France, ca. 1925.
  • Condition: excellent; light wear consistent with age, but the design is clear.
  • Dimensions: 5/8” wide at crown, tapering to 1/8” at the shank.
  • Finger Size: 11-1/4.
  • Weight: 10.6 grams.

A delightful Chinese antique carved agate pendant enhanced with its original knotted silk cord and Type A (untreated) green jadeite bead, finished with a 14K yellow gold bail. The carving represents a male elder seated atop a fish and holding a pair of plums over his shoulder. The carving makes nice use of the agate's natural coloring to represent the fish and fruit. In Chinese symbology, the fish is a sign of wealth and abundance, and the plum is a sign for longevity. The jadeite bead is semi-translucent, with moderate mottling and medium grain. This pendant was salvaged from ca 1900 Chinese necklace that was far too worn to repair. In both the original necklace and in this pendant, the carving is designed to hang upside down so that it appears right-side-up when the wearer holds the pendant and raises it up in her own hand.

Origin: China, ca. 1900. Condition: excellent, very light wear along edges consistent with age. Dimensions: 7/8" wide; 1-11/16" long from top of bail.

NOTE: Other pieces created from the original antique necklace include Items #1344595, 1350547, and 1350538.

A steel cowbell hand-painted on one side with a detailed rendering of a living room with stockings hung above a roaring fireplace, a grandfather clock showing midnight, and a sleeping cat (or dog). “’Twas the night before Christmas.” the opening line of Clement Moore’s 1823 poem “A Visit from St. Nicholas” is painted at the top. One narrow side of the bell is painted, “Happy New Year,” and the other with “The year is going, let him go,” a line from Alfred Lord Tennyson’s 1850 poem “Ring out, wild bells.” The other large side shows a woman walking along a snowing path, her arms laden with holly wreaths and the legend, “Merrie Xmax,” Given the literary references of the other decoration, this image must refer to some long-forgotten Christmas or New Year’s tale.

A beautiful 18K yellow gold locket in the Art Nouveau taste, the front cover depicting a water nymph, her streaming hair entwined with seaweed studded with small rose-cut diamonds. Her ear is adorned with an earring in the form of a coral branch. Her head appears just above delicately rippling waves that high the word “Eau” for water. This design was part of a four-part series designed by Bargas representing the four elements of earth, air, fire and water. They are sometimes seen as buttons, but very rarely worked in gold and used as a locket. Like many French lockets of the period, this example opens by swiveling sideways rather than being hinged. The interior retains its original fittings and glass cover. The back cover has the slightly matte finish typical of Art Nouveau jewels and has a period “ES” monogram. The bail is fully hallmarked with 18K gold marks and with the maker’s mark (partially obscured).

Origin: France, ca. 1900. Condition: excellent, sharp detail. Size: 1-1/8” x 1-3/8” excluding jumpring). Weight: 9.9 grams. Approximate Total Diamond Weight: .05 ct.

A classic French Art Nouveau 18K gold brooch featuring a young woman with naught but a sprig of flowers covering her breasts set against a poppy blossom. A swallow appears over her shoulder. In Victorian symbology, swallows variously represented wishes for a safe return or “home and heart” since the they mate for life. Similarly, poppies had various meanings including imagination and pleasure. The design was created by the sculptor Armand-Pierre-Louis Quenard (1865-1925) and presented at the inaugural salon of the Société des Artistes Français in 1901. The clasp is stamped with French 18K gold marks and with an illegible maker’s mark.

NOTE: The brooch could be converted to a pendant with the addition of a folding bail to the back.
