Lovely handpainted Meissen porcelain inkstand featuring a tray with separate inkwell and sander. All three parts are decorated with a rich blue background punctuated with gilt-edged reserves. Each of the reserves is decorated with a delicately hand-painted Watteau "pastoral loves" scenes--seven different scenes in all. The bottoms of all pieces are marked with the crossed-swords mark in blue. Each mark has a single scratched hash mark. The tray also has the incised number "36" and another incised mark (illegible).Origin: Meissen, Germany, circa 1880. Condition: the set is very lovely and has a nice appearance; all pieces show expected wear to the gilding along rims; the tray has some surface scratching in the center from rubbing against the bottoms of the inkwell and sander; the knob on top of the inkwell's lid has been broken off and the original piece reglued (I would recommend having the knob more expertly repaired) and there is a flake on the underside of the lid; the inkwell doesn't appear to have ever had a liner; the sander has a small flake on the underside of the rim. Size: tray, 7-1/2" x 11" x 1-1/2" high; inkwell, 4-1/4" diameter, 4" high; sander, 3-3/4" diameter, 3" high.
