Top-notch English bombe-form enameled box, the top decorated in a hand-painted Watteau-type scene probably taken from Jean Pillement's 1760 "The Ladies Amusement". The quality of this painting is of the very highest quality, and might have been exectuted by one of the French enamelists working in Battersea. The sides are hand-painted by a different artist with pastoral scenes. The reserves are framed in rocaille work in thick white pigments typical of the earlier English enamels. The background is highlighted with gilt vermicelli decoration which even appears on the underneath side of the box. The mountings retain most of their original gilding.Origin: England, circa 1765. Condition: excellent, all original, gilding intact, absolutely no cracks or repairs. Size: 3-3/8" x 2-9/16" x 1-1/2".

Rare four-lobed copper bowl decorated in painted enamel. The decoration pictures three ancient Chinese warriors in a landscape. Like nearly all enamelware, this piece has suffered from the ravages of time, but the fine detail of the decoration and the rarity of the form more than compensate for the condition.Origin: China, late 18th century. Condition: numerous chips and cracks, particularly along edges. Size: 4-1/2" diam., 2-1/8" high.
