A nice coin silver rattail spoon by John Brown, active in Baltimore from 1799, after apprenticing in Philadelphia. The bowl is rather narrow, suggesting it was to be used as a pap spoon. The spoon must have been an early piece from Brown's shop, as the design is quite clearly drawn from late 18th century styles. The three-letter monogram in a bright-cut cartouche is also characteristic of the period. The back is marked with Brown's punch.Origin: Baltimore, ca. 1800. Condition: a few small to moderate dings in the bowl. Size: 5-5/8". Weight: 11.25 grams.

An incredibly rare pair of coin silver serving pieces in Gorham’s “Square Medallion” pattern designed in December 1867. This pattern combines two of Gorham’s most revolutionary mid-19th century decorative elements—medallion and cube—to create a unique design. It’s unlikely that this pattern was made in a full line. We have seen a couple of related serving pieces that also incorporate the stag’s head from the “Saxon” pattern. The columnar handles are topped with large rounded-edge cubes, decorated on either side with medallions illustrating a Greek god and goddess. The cubes are surmounted by heavy, fully three-dimensional sculpted busts of a classical figure wearing a diadem. The knife’s blade is further decorated with engraved anthemion leaves. Both pieces are marked with an early Gorham hallmark. The original purpose of these serving pieces is unclear—a similarly shaped knife is simply referred to as a “serving knife” in Carpenter’s “Gorham Silver”—but might be an ice cream knife. The fork has unusually small tines for its overall size. The pieces are extremely heavy and were obviously made to impress! Origin: America, ca. 1867. Condition: excellent, all original, no monogram. Size: knife, 10” long; fork, 8” long. Weight: knife, 132.5 grams; fork, 107.5 grams.

Wonderful large American coin silver napkin ring decorated with a Classical medallion and bright-cut engraving. The medallion depicts a young male Greek warrior wearing a helmet. The medallion is flanked with strapwork engraving. The upper and lower edges of the napkin ring are worked with foliate bright-cut engraving. The back is engraved “J. W. Johnson M.D.” within an engraved reserve. The interior is engraved “A Friend”. This particular medallion pattern has not yet been attributed to a particular silversmith. The pieces that have appeared with the matching medallion almost always incorporate extensive bright-cut engraving, as well.Origin: America, ca. 1865. Condition: the bottom edge of the back side has a bit of waviness; nice detail. Size: 1-25/32” high; 2-1/8” x 1-3/4”. Weight: 47.5 grams.

Three coin silver tablespoons with downturned fiddleback handles. The bowls are nicely pointed and are remarkably even. The handles have lovely period monogram “EVB”. The backs are stamped “N. Matson”. Newell Matson was born in Painesville, Ohio in 1815. He moved to Owego, NY in 1845, and later to Milwaukee, WI. The design of these spoons would indicate they were made before his move to New York.Origin: America, circa 1830s. Condition: excellent, no dings or deep scratches, minimal wear. Size: 8-5/8” long. Weight: 45.5 grams each.
