An exquisite 14K yellow gold Edwardian dresser box by Marcus & Co. The surfaces are engraved in a classic pattern of parallel bands enclosed within border reserves of stylized floral motifs. The box is raised on squared bracket feet. The lid features a stunning reverse-carved Essex crystal depicting a group of Mallard ducks taking flight from their rush nests as a fox leaps at them. This is certainly one of the most detailed Essex crystals we've seen, with amazing detail. The paint is applied thinly so the water has a very realistic, limpid appearance against the more solid textures of fur, feathers and rushes. The crystal is backed with mother-of-pearl. The box's interior is lined with mahogany panels. The bottom of the box is made of gold-plated metal rather than solid 14K, for added strength. The sides, lid and feet, however, are entirely worked in 14K gold. The bottom edge is hallmarked "Marcus & Co. New York 14KT". Marcus & Co. was one of the most important American jewelry houses from the late 19th through the mid-20th centuries. It was in direct competition for both designers and clients with other makers such as Tiffany & Co. John D. Rockefeller was one of Marcus' largest clients. Origin: America, ca. 1920. Condition: excellent, all original, no dings, no monograms. Size: 5-15/16" x 3-1/4" x 1-3/4". Weight (with liner and plated bottom removed): 302.0 grams.

Outstanding American late Classical mirror framed in solid well-figured mahogany with a gilt applied composition border of bellflowers. The gilding has a particularly rich patina. The glass is old and 1/4" thick, but probably not original, and has dulled to a very nice patina. The plate is backed with a wood panel that is covered with paper. The nails holding the plate in place have been replaced.Origin: America, probably mid-Atlantic region, ca. 1840. Condition: all original surfaces; the tip of one bellflower is broken off; crackling of composition elements appropriate to age. Size: 14.5" diameter.
