A striking 1950s extra-large bracelet charm by Van Cleef & Arpels. The charm is a fully-functional roulette wheel studded along the edge with collet-set round cut sapphires and emeralds. Under crystal dome, a tiny ruby bead serves as the marble. The moveable handle spins the dial, causing the ruby to skip along until if falls into one of the depressions on the wheel. Instead of numbers, however, the wheel is engraved “Je t’aime” (I love you…)/”Un Peu” (…a little)/”Beacoup” (…a lot)/”Passion” (…passionately)/”A La Folie” (…crazily)/”Pas Du Tout” (…not at all). The gemstones, as would be expected, are of the finest quality. A plain roulette wheel charm, without gemstones and engraved only with numbers, appears in a 1955 VCA print advertisement. The back is marked “Van Cleef et Arpels”, “Made In France” and has the serial number “16V507”. The maker’s mark appears on the bale. This piece can be worn on a heavy bracelet, but would be even more spectacular worn as a necklace.Origin: France, ca. 1955. Condition: excellent, all original. Size: 1-7/16” diameter. Weight: 22.7 grams. Approximate Total Gemstone Weight: sapphire, 1.0 ct; emerald, .35 ct; ruby, .1 ct.

A lovely pair of 18K yellow gold and steel earrings by Fred of Paris. The original FORCE 10 line was created by French jeweler Fred Samuels in 1966 and was based on pieces of rigging found on sailboats. Since 1936, the Parisian house had been one of the world’s most exclusive jewelers, the Samuels’ combination of precious metals with stainless steel was a shocking innovation. In the forty years since the collection debuted, Fred of Paris has continually tweaked the collection by adding gemstones or other decorative elements—in this case cloisonné enamel. The translucent green, red and blue flowers appearing against an opaque white background gives the earclips a casual style that meshes nicely with the gold and steel setting. They’d be perfect to wear with either jeans or business attire. The backs are fully hallmarked with the maker’s mark and the French 18K gold standard, and are signed “Fred of Paris/Force 10”.Origin: France, ca. 2000. Condition: excellent. Size: 13/16” long; 7/16” wide. Weight: 12.8 grams.

An exquisite diamond- and fancy sapphire-set 15K yellow gold clasp highlights this strand of late Victorian cultured pearls. The round clasp features three antique cushion- and round-cut natural fancy-color sapphires highlighted with three old mine-cut diamonds. The sapphires are in pleasing hues of blue, green and pink. The blue sapphire has light tone and moderately-light saturation, while the pink and green sapphires are more strongly colored. All the sapphires have excellent polish with high luster, and show no signs of heat treatment. The small old mine cut diamonds are of nice quality, ranging from I to K in color. The clasp is currently fitted for a single strand, but can easily be converted for use with a double strand. The pearls in the strand have a strong ivory color with rose overtones and range from 3 to 5.8mm. Unlike most graduated strands, the largest pearls are strung nearest the clasp, because the clasp is intended to be worn. Frankly, we’d recommend placing this spectacular clasp on an equally spectacular strand of pearls.Origin: England, ca. 1900. Condition: clasp excellent; pearls show considerable wear. Size: clasp, 1/2" diameter (excluding bales); strand, 17-1/2” long. Approximate Total Gemstone Weight: diamond, .18 ct; blue sapphire, .63 ct; pink sapphire, .45 ct; green sapphire, .43 ct.

A stunning Viennese silver and gold brooch styled as a fully three-dimension horse’s head. The horse is fully rigged with a bit, bridle and reins, all worked in 14K yellow gold. The level of detail on both the front and back of the brooch is simply amazing. It has a sculptural quality rarely seen in animal-theme jewelry. The texture of the short hairs of the faces is palpable and even the veins running down from the horse’s forehead to its muzzle are picked out in detail. The base of the neck is marked with the maker’s mark “H & S” and the original c-clasp is stamped with Austrian silver hallmarks used 1872-1922. The brooch is presented in its original fitted box, the interior of the lid imprinted “Moppert/Baden-Baden”. Baden-Baden was the leading European luxury spa during the last half of the nineteenth century, counting Queen Victoria and the French, German, and Austrian emperors as regular guests. Wilhelm Moppert established the town’s most exclusive jewelry shop and sold to Europe’s crowned heads and nobility. He was often in a position to purchase jewels, as well. Dostoyevsky writes of the shop in his novel “The Gambler”, frequently mentioning the unlucky gamblers in the renowned casino who were forced to sell their jewels at Moppert to settle their gambling debts. Origin: Austria/Germany, ca. 1875. Condition: excellent, all original, never polished. Size: 1-3/4” x 1-3/4”. Weight: 17.4 grams.

A very fine Art Nouveau enameled 14K yellow gold cattleya orchid brooch by A. J. Hedges. This quality of this piece is stunning. The enamel fades from a milky semitranslucent texture near the center of the flower to very translucent pale shades at the edges of the petals. The color shifts from a greenish-cream color to a pure pink along the very edges. The orchid is fully three dimensional, and the throat is set with a small seed pearl. The stem, enameled in mottled pink and green extends below the flower. Hedges was among the very best of the Newark enamellers, but their products are very difficult to find. Along with Whiteside & Blank, their enamel flowers tend to be larger and more complex than those of most other American makers. The back retains the original pinstem and clasp stamped with Hedges’ hallmark and “14K”.Origin: America, ca. 1900. Condition: excellent, no enamel damage. Size: 1-1/4” x 1-1/2”. Weight: 7.6 grams.

A beautiful pair of Victorian 14K yellow gold earrings, each featuring old European round cut diamonds in buttercup settings surrounding an oval mixed-cut ruby. The diamonds are separated by radiating lines of black taille d’eparge enamel. The rubies have medium-dark, moderately saturated, strongly purplish-red. Their noticeable fluorescence makes the rubies even stronger in sunlight. The stones have characteristic intact silk inclusions that indicate they have not been heat treated, and they are probably from the Mogok region of Burma. The diamonds are also of very good quality, estimated at F color, VVS clarity. The size of the earrings makes them appropriate for daytime wear, but the way they hang below the earlobe also gives them a dressy quality. Tested and guaranteed 14K.Origin: America, ca. 1890. Condition: excellent, ear wires are probably replacements. Size: 11/16” diameter. Weight: 5.8 grams. Approximate Total Gemstone Weight: diamond, .6 carat; ruby, .54 carat.

A very pretty Art Nouveau honeymoon pin worked in 10K yellow gold enhanced with enamel and seed pearls. The iris blossom is beautifully decorated in translucent shades of purple and greenish-yellow enamel and is centered by a small seed pearl. The flower appears against a crescent moon studded with graduated-size seed pearls. In the Victorian language of flowers, these elements were understood to symbolize “honey” (the flower) and “moon” (the crescent), thus representing “honeymoon”. These small pins were often given by grooms to their new brides as a wedding gift. For some reason, irises are somewhat uncommon in enameled jewelry. Though unsigned, the workmanship and style of this example suggests a Newark maker. The original clasp is marked “10K”.Origin: America, ca. 1900. Condition: excellent, no enamel damage. Size: 7/8” x 13/16”. Weight: 2.3 grams.
