$495

A fine pair of Victorian bean-back cufflinks, each oval face set with a round color-change sapphire flanked by a pair of old European cut diamonds. The sapphires change from blue in sunlight to violet in incandescent light. One stone exhibits a more pronounced color change than the other. This is normal because of the difficulty in matching a pair of stones for size, clarity and color under varying lighting conditions. The diamonds are fine quality with bright color. The gold surfaces have the softly-bloomed matte texture prized in the Art Nouveau era. The bean backs have original bright-cut monograms. Marked “14K” and with an unidentified American maker’s mark.

Origin: America, ca. 1900. Condition: excellent. Size: 5/8” x 1/2”. Weight: 5.5 grams. Approximate Total Gemstone Weight: sapphire, .44 ct; diamond, .12 ct.

$550

A handsome pair of Victorian 14K yellow gold double-sided cufflinks, the faces set with cabochon agates. The variety of agate is called “landscape agate” because the colors and markings resemble painted landscapes. These particular stones suggest colorful sunsets behind wooded landscapes. The bezel settings are finished with fine millegraining. The connectors are marked 14K and have an unknown American maker’s mark.

Origin: America, ca. 1890. Condition: excellent. Size: 5/8” x 9/16”. Weight: 10.4 grams.

$795

A fine pair of Victorian 14K yellow gold cufflinks, the faces formed from carved lapis lazuli scarabs. The scarab motif, an ancient Egyptian symbol of longevity, were used in western jewelry from the Archaeological Revival period (ca. 1860) through the years following the discovery of King Tut’s tomb (1926). The construction of these cufflinks suggests they probably date from around 1900. The lapis has a nice medium blue color with lighter veining of whitish calcite. There are no glittery pyrite flecks. Marked 14K.

Origin: America, ca. 1900. Condition: excellent. Size: faces, 11/16” x 9/16”. Weight: 8.1 grams.

$695

A handsome pair of Victorian 14K yellow gold cufflinks, the faces featuring oval cabochons of gold-in-quartz. This stone became popular for men’s jewelry at the time of the California gold rush. Prospectors originally kept pieces of quartz with tiny bits of gold inclusions and to have custom jewelry made, and the fashion spread. These stones are simply set in a softly-bloomed gold stepped border. The two stones have a light and dark striped pattern and are nicely matched. Tested and guaranteed 14K.

Origin: America, ca. 1880. Condition: excellent, all original. Size: 3/4” x 5/8”. Weight: 10.9 grams.

$3200

An outstanding pair of modernist 18K yellow gold and blue topaz cufflinks by exclusive Brazilian jewelry designer Haroldo Burle Marx. He is known for his bold use of colorful, large gemstones native to Brazil. His designs for men's jewelry are extremely uncommon. Each cufflink is roughly formed as a highly-polished "c" enclosing a Florentine-finished background. A brilliant oval blue topaz completes each cufflink. The gemstones are fine quality, graded as very slightly bluish-green hue with medium tone and very slightly grayish saturation (vslgB 5/3). Both stones are eye-clean and have good cut. Each cufflink is signed "Burle Marx" and is stamped "18K" and "No Bras".

Marx was chosen by the Brazilian government to create gifts for visiting heads of state and their wives, including the Empress Nagako of Japan, the Empress Farah Diba of Iran, Queen Margrethe of Denmark, and Indira Gandhi. He was also a favored jeweler of Natalie Wood and Merle Oberon. One of his most famous commissions was a gem-set cross for Pope John Paul II.

Origin: America, ca. 1970. Condition: excellent, all original. Size: 1-1/8" x 7/8". Weight: 29.0 grams. Approximate Total Gemstone Weight: 28.5 cts.
