An outstanding pair of French Art Nouveau 18K yellow gold cufflinks in the Egyptian Revival taste. The square faces are intricately pierced and decorated with round reserves featuring beautifully-detailed scarabs, surrounded by full-blown and bud-form lotus blossoms. The navette-shaped backs are decorated with the same elements, but without the ornate hand-sawn piercing. The lotus blossoms are joined by undulating lines that suggest the watery depths of the Nile. The surfaces are finished in the semi-matte Russian finished often used on the better pieces of French Art Nouveau jewels. The connectors are fully stamped with “tete d’aigle” 18K gold hallmarks and the poincon for an unidentified master goldsmith. There is also a serial number, indicating that the cufflinks were sold by an important jeweler such as Boucheron or Cartier. These are among the finest Art Nouveau cufflinks we’ve seen.Origin: France, ca. 1890. Condition: excellent, sharp detail. Size: 9/16” x 9/16”. Weight: 8.8 grams.

A terrific pair of mid-century haute couture cufflinks by Pierre Cardin. Each face comprises a carved jadeite bead simply mounted on a gold post. The backs are simple, slightly arched gold bars. The jadeite beads are carved in a floral pattern and are done so in a way that they are carved completely through from one side to another. It’s possible that the cufflinks were constructed from an antique strand of jadeite beads. The jade has noticeable mottling in natural, strongly saturated shades of dark, medium and light green. The translucency is fair. Magnification and absoption spectra show no signs of dye. The connectors are signed “Pierre Cardin” and are fully hallmarked with French 18K marks.Pierre Cardin designed a very limited line of fine jewels in the 1950s and 60s. They were sold only at the couturier’s main store and are quite difficult to find now. Origin: Paris, ca. 1960. Condition: excellent, all original, no cracks or chips. Size: 1/2” diameter. Weight: 10.4 grams.

A superb pair of Art Deco style cufflinks by Konovalenko Art, the boutique founded by the acclaimed Russian emigre jeweler Vasily Konovalenko. Each cufflink features a rectangular black onyx tablet set in 18K white gold, punctuated with two semicircular plaques set with brilliant round diamonds surrounded by arches of calibre cut diamonds in a sort of "sunrise" pattern. The diamonds are of very fine quality, estimated at F/G color and VS1 clarity. According to Konovalenko's daughter, these cufflinks were made in 1992 as a special order and are unique. The quality of workmanship is superb, as evidenced by the complicated pierced gold work underneath the onyx tablets, and the way in which the diamond-set hemispheres "drape" over the outer edges of the onyx tablets. The toggle backs are signed Konovalenko. The connectors are marked for 18K gold and have serial numbers. Origin: America, 1992. Condition: excellent, all original. Size: 27/32" x 9/16".
