$2495

Very rare pair of 14K yellow gold, diamond and lapis lazuli cufflinks designed by Erte in the "La Dentelle-State I" pattern. The faces of the cufflinks are cut in a shape that suggests a bird, with lapis lazuli cabochons for eyes. The exposed gold surfaces are engraved and cast in an intricate pattern of geometric bars and swirls to suggest lace, hence the title ("dentelle" is "lace" in French). The appearance is angular and severe--in the Art Deco taste--rather than the softer, frillier appearance of lace. Short bands of bead-set single-cut diamonds finish off the design.

Known throughout his career as a costume designer, illustrator and the "Father of Art Deco", Erte began designing jewelry in 1979. At the time of his death in 1990, he had produced just over 300 different designs, most of them were made in rather small limited editions. Only 100 examples of the "La Dentelle-State I" cufflinks were made. The backs are signed "Erte", "CFA 14K", and "11/100".

Origin: America, ca. 1980. Condition: excellent. Size: 2-1/8" x 7/8". Weight: 20.25 grams. Approximate Total Gemstone Weight: lapis, 4.8 cts; diamond, .5 ct.

$2950

A very fine pair of 18K yellow gold cufflinks by Van Cleef & Arpels. Each cufflink has two faceted baton faces, each collet-set with a band of rectangular cut sapphires. The stones have superbly saturated color and excellent clarity. The faces are joined with solid connectors in white gold that conceal a unique telescoping action. This movement allows the cufflinks to be worn with cuffs of varying thicknesses and makes them easier to put on, as well. Each is fully hallmarked with French “tete d’aigle” for 18K gold and also with Van Cleef & Arpels ‘maker’s mark. Both have the serial number “17664Z”. One cufflink is further marked “Van Cleef & Arpels S.G.D.G. Brevete Déposé 48893”, thus indicating the patent number for the closing mechanism.

Origin: France, ca. 1940. Condition: excellent, all original. Size: 11/16” x 5/16”. Weight: 13.5 grams. Approximate Total Gemstone Weight: 4.64 carats.
