A fine pair of vintage 18K yellow gold cufflinks in the "stirrup" style popularized by Cartier in the late 1940s. The cufflinks are constructed from a solid bar, finished at each end with interlocking arches. By pulling on the ends, the arches can be unfolded for each in putting the cufflinks through the cuff holes. Then, a simple flip up causes the arches to hold the fabric tightly together. Cufflinks of the sort are seen in a number of variations, but this is a particularly handsome pair. The bars are marked with French 18K gold hallmarks, and also with an unidentified maker's mark "GP".Origin: France, ca. 1955. Condition: excellent, all original. Size: faces, 3/4" x 9/16". Weight: 11.5 grams.

A delightful pair of Victorian cufflinks worked in 18K yellow gold and set with emeralds. Each large face features a large coiled snake dipping its mouth into a chalice. According to Catholic tradition, while preaching in Ephesus, St. John the Evangelist was given a poisoned chalice of wine by his enemies. Before drinking, he blessed the wine and the poison left the wine in the form of a snake. The cufflinks are beautifully detailed. The snakes are finely engraved and stippled for texture, and the eyes are set with cabochon emeralds. The chalices are slightly raised from the surface and are flanked by engraved foliage with cushion-cut emerald “blossoms”. The emeralds are of very fine color with excellent clarity. The chalices are also highlighted with bright-cut engraving that makes them appear as if they are filled with a shimmering liquid. The faces are connected by chains to oval backs. The backs are marked “18Ct”.Origin: England, ca. 1870. Condition: excellent. Size: 7/8” diameter. Weight: 12.0 grams. Approximate Total Gemstone Weight: .31 carats.

An extremely fine pair of Art Deco cufflinks worked in platinum and 18K yellow gold. Each square face is centered with a gypsy-set old European cut diamond, and has square cut blue sapphires at each corner. The stones have excellent color and clarity, especially the sapphires, which are bright blue. The platinum is finished with a matte surface, causing the gemstones to seem even more vibrant. The faces have pierced galleries around the edges and are attached to baton backs with chains. The outer surface of the batons are also worked in matte platinum. The geometric styling of these cufflinks is a very good example of early Art Deco.Origin: Europe, possibly France, ca. 1920. Condition: excellent, all original. Size: 15/32" x 15/32". Weight: 7.5 grams. Approximate Total Gemstone Weight: diamond, .25 carat; sapphire, 2.0 carats.
