An exquisite Art Nouveau brooch that clearly demonstrates why French Art Nouveau jewels are without parallel. A single orchid blossom, carved from banded chalcedony agate, rests atop a stem and foliage worked in contrasting yellow gold and silver and set with diamonds. The flower, painstakingly carved from a single piece of stone, relies on the stone’s natural color banding to produce the desired effect. The carver left only a thin layer of opaque orange stone on the back of the flower and finished the pinkish front with a matte surface to create a slightly translucent effect. The carved lines representing veining were more highly polished to glisten just a bit. The combination provides the subtle color variations and velvety textures typical of a real orchid blossom. The blossom is centered by three pistils, each prong-set with an old mine-cut diamond, the largest of which is approximately .2 carats. Just below the blossom, a silver bud is bead-set with rose-cut diamonds. The stem and leaves are worked in yellow gold that is very strongly colored. The strap-like leaves are also set with rose-cut diamonds in various sizes. All the diamonds are of good quality, the larger ones being estimated at J color and SI2 clarity. Orchids were wildly popular in France during the last three decades of the 19th century, and they often appear in jewels by leading Art Nouveau masters. Pieces of this quality, however, are rarely available on the market. It is a certainty that this brooch was produced by one of the leading Parisian houses such as Boucheron, Vever or Tiffany. French export laws at the time, however, required that all marks on an exported item be removed and replaced with the “tete de Mercure” export mark, which is visible on the pinstem. Signs of the obliterated first mark can still be seen. Origin: France, ca. 1880. Condition: excellent, some light flaking along edges of the carved flower are visible under 10x magnification, all original. Size: 2-5/8” x 1-1/4”. Weight: 10.25 grams. Approximate Total Diamond Weight: .85 carats.

A stunning Imperial Russian 14K yellow gold Art Nouveau pendant set with a dazzling array of colored gemstones favored at the last Romanov court of Nicholas and Alexandra—demantoid garnets, rhodolite garnets and rubies. The pendant comprises two curving flowering branches, the leaves set with old European-cut green demantoid garnets, and the flowers represented by old European-cut pinkish-violet rhodolite garnets. These are the two rarest forms of garnet. Demantoids, especially, were favored in Russian Art Nouveau jewels and were prized not only for their unusual color, but for the diamond-like brilliance. The central flower’s petals are set with demantoids and the center is set with a cushion-cut ruby. The setting is stamped with the Kokoshnik used in Moscow from 1908 to 1917, the “56” standard (14K), and also bears the goldsmith’s mark “SK” (transliterated).Origin: Russia, ca. 1910. Condition: excellent, all original. Size: 1-9/16” x 1-1/16”. Weight: 6.0 grams. Approximate Total Gemstone Weight: demantoids, 1.19 carats; rhodolites, 1.42 carats; ruby, .25 carat.

A wonderful late Victorian 14K yellow gold brooch in the form of a dragon. The scaly creature unfurls his feathered wings and rides on a ship-like vessel decorated in the Etruscan style. The dragon's traditional tail has been transformed into a foliate bouquet. His jaws clasp a prong-set old European cut diamond and his eye and wing are set with small rubies. Interestingly, the reverse side of the pin is completely covered with ornate engraved decoration--a most curious treatment since it is not visible when being worn. The pin retains its original pinstem and early safety clasp, marked "14K".Origin: America, ca. 1900. Condition: excellent, all original. Size: 1" x 1-3/8". Weight: 7.0 grams.

A marvelous Art Nouveau dog collar necklace comprising a double row of very fine gold chains joining collet-set navette-cut turquoise cabochons interspersed with double s-shaped, pierced gold plaques. The choice of stones is particularly attractive, using the natural matrix to provide brown and cream color contrast with the bluish-green turquoise. The stones are very slightly graduated in size. The necklace was originally 13” long, but was extended with additional chains at one end to a total of 15-1/4”; and the original box clasp was replaced with the current vermeil clasp. This piece can be fitted to a particular neck by adjusting the number of links between each stone to achieve perfect draping. Tested and guaranteed 14K gold.Origin: America, ca. 1895. Condition: excellent, extended as noted above. Size: 15-1/4” long; 1-7/32” wide at center. Weight: 28.5 grams. Approximate Total Gemstone Weight: 45.0 carats.

A wonderfully naughty Art Nouveau 18K yellow gold ring depicting a couple engaged in mutual oral stimulation. Victorian and Edwardian erotic jewelry is extremely rare, having been made only for the daring few who were willing to wear such things in public. Like other pieces of erotica, the designer was charged with making the object look as innocent as possible, only revealing its true nature upon very careful and prolonged inspection. Upon first examination, this ring appears to be a typical sinuous floral Art Nouveau design. Looking closely however, the design reveals a man and woman amorously entwined. Even the back of the shank is decorated with a pair of somewhat cleverly concealed penises. The ring is marked with French hallmarks for 18K gold.Origin: France, ca. 1910. Condition: excellent, very little wear. Size: 1/2" wide. Finger Size: 8-3/4. Weight: 7.5 grams.
