A beautiful 14K gold pendant enhanced with translucent enamels. The pendant is in the form of a viola blossom suspended from a golden stem and flanked by leaves. The flower petals and leaves are intricately and very finely enameled in shades of green, yellow, violet and rose. Pansies are much more common in enameled jewelry than their country cousins, the viola. The blossom is centered by a small seed pearl, and the pendant is finished with a freshwater dog-tooth pearl drop. The pendant is suspended from its original chain. The pendant is unmarked, but is most certainly a product of one of the Newark makers such as Krementz, Larter, Alling, etc. Tested and guaranteed 14K.Origin: America, ca. 1900. Condition: excellent, all original, no enamel damage. Size: chain, 16” long; pendant, 1-3/8” x 15/16”. Weight: 6.0 grams.

A lovely small Art Nouveau floral brooch worked in 10K yellow gold and highlighted at the center with a gold pansy decorated in translucent enamels. The coloring of the pansy is particularly nice, shading delicately from a soft rose and yellow on the upper petals to a stronger bluish-violet and black on the lower petals. The pearl is centered with a small seed pearl, and another seed pearl to one side suggests a bud. In the Victorian language of flowers, the pansy represented remembrance. Small brooches such as this might have been given as a parting gift. The flower is enclosed in a gold circle flanked by “wings”. The back retains the original pinstem and clasp marked “10K”.Origin: America, ca. 1910. Condition: excellent, all original, no enamel damage. Size: 3/4" x 1-1/8”. Weight: 2.5 grams.

A lovely late Victorian 14K yellow gold pin in the Art Nouveau taste. The outer gold rim, in a modified heart shape, encloses two sprigs of gold mistletoe, enameled in soft translucent shades of green and gold. Each pair of leaves flanks a 2-1/2 point prong-set old European cut diamond. The gold stems of the mistletoe are tied with a bit of gold ribbon. Though mistletoe is now generally associated with the Christmastide kissing tradition, the Victorian language of flowers used the plant to signify difficulties that have been overcome. A small brooch such as this might have been a gift for a lady following a trying period in her life. The back retains the original pinstem and clasp marked with Krementz’ hallmark and “14K”.Origin: America, ca. 1900. Condition: excellent, no enamel damage, all original. Size: 1” x 15/16”. Weight: 2.5 grams.

An exquisite Art Nouveau brooch that clearly demonstrates why French Art Nouveau jewels are without parallel. A single orchid blossom, carved from banded chalcedony agate, rests atop a stem and foliage worked in contrasting yellow gold and silver and set with diamonds. The flower, painstakingly carved from a single piece of stone, relies on the stone’s natural color banding to produce the desired effect. The carver left only a thin layer of opaque orange stone on the back of the flower and finished the pinkish front with a matte surface to create a slightly translucent effect. The carved lines representing veining were more highly polished to glisten just a bit. The combination provides the subtle color variations and velvety textures typical of a real orchid blossom. The blossom is centered by three pistils, each prong-set with an old mine-cut diamond, the largest of which is approximately .2 carats. Just below the blossom, a silver bud is bead-set with rose-cut diamonds. The stem and leaves are worked in yellow gold that is very strongly colored. The strap-like leaves are also set with rose-cut diamonds in various sizes. All the diamonds are of good quality, the larger ones being estimated at J color and SI2 clarity. Orchids were wildly popular in France during the last three decades of the 19th century, and they often appear in jewels by leading Art Nouveau masters. Pieces of this quality, however, are rarely available on the market. It is a certainty that this brooch was produced by one of the leading Parisian houses such as Boucheron, Vever or Tiffany. French export laws at the time, however, required that all marks on an exported item be removed and replaced with the “tete de Mercure” export mark, which is visible on the pinstem. Signs of the obliterated first mark can still be seen. Origin: France, ca. 1880. Condition: excellent, some light flaking along edges of the carved flower are visible under 10x magnification, all original. Size: 2-5/8” x 1-1/4”. Weight: 10.25 grams. Approximate Total Diamond Weight: .85 carats.
