A lovely vintage 14K yellow gold stylized floral brooch by Ming’s of Honolulu. The pin is set with two white jade drops and is scattered with unusual 4.7-5.4 mm silvery-blue cultured pearls with very nice luster. The jade has a slight lavender overtone to the color. This piece can also be suspended from a chain or silk cord and worn as a pendant. Ming’s was Hawaii’s most important jeweler, and this style is very typical, though the use of colored pearls is not terribly common. The back is marked “14K Ming’s”.

$1250

A delightful 14K yellow gold brooch depicting “Thursday’s Child” from the poem “Monday’s Child.” The cherub-like child is depicted walking along carrying a walking stick with his bag of belonging’s tied to the end, illustrating the line “…Thursday’s child has far to go.” The child walks along the top of a baroque freshwater pearl and his eyes are set with round sapphires. William Ruser, the personal jeweler to Hollywood’s elite such as Loretta Young and Joan Crawford, created a series of jewels depicting the children from the poem, each in a characteristic pose that identified its correct day. They were undoubtedly popular gifts for new mothers in Hollywood. Ruser was one of Beverly Hills’ most exclusive jewelers until the late 60s when he sold his Rodeo Drive boutique to Van Cleef & Arpels. The pin is signed “14K Ruser”.

Origin: America, ca. 1950. Condition: excellent, all original. Size: 1-5/8” long. Weight: 12.4 grams.

A striking 1950s extra-large bracelet charm by Van Cleef & Arpels. The charm is a fully-functional roulette wheel studded along the edge with collet-set round cut sapphires and emeralds. Under crystal dome, a tiny ruby bead serves as the marble. The moveable handle spins the dial, causing the ruby to skip along until if falls into one of the depressions on the wheel. Instead of numbers, however, the wheel is engraved “Je t’aime” (I love you…)/”Un Peu” (…a little)/”Beacoup” (…a lot)/”Passion” (…passionately)/”A La Folie” (…crazily)/”Pas Du Tout” (…not at all). The gemstones, as would be expected, are of the finest quality. A plain roulette wheel charm, without gemstones and engraved only with numbers, appears in a 1955 VCA print advertisement. The back is marked “Van Cleef et Arpels”, “Made In France” and has the serial number “16V507”. The maker’s mark appears on the bale. This piece can be worn on a heavy bracelet, but would be even more spectacular worn as a necklace.

Origin: France, ca. 1955. Condition: excellent, all original. Size: 1-7/16” diameter. Weight: 22.7 grams. Approximate Total Gemstone Weight: sapphire, 1.0 ct; emerald, .35 ct; ruby, .1 ct.

A lovely pair of 18K yellow gold and steel earrings by Fred of Paris. The original FORCE 10 line was created by French jeweler Fred Samuels in 1966 and was based on pieces of rigging found on sailboats. Since 1936, the Parisian house had been one of the world’s most exclusive jewelers, the Samuels’ combination of precious metals with stainless steel was a shocking innovation. In the forty years since the collection debuted, Fred of Paris has continually tweaked the collection by adding gemstones or other decorative elements—in this case cloisonné enamel. The translucent green, red and blue flowers appearing against an opaque white background gives the earclips a casual style that meshes nicely with the gold and steel setting. They’d be perfect to wear with either jeans or business attire. The backs are fully hallmarked with the maker’s mark and the French 18K gold standard, and are signed “Fred of Paris/Force 10”.

Origin: France, ca. 2000. Condition: excellent. Size: 13/16” long; 7/16” wide. Weight: 12.8 grams.

$12,500

A stunning and extremely rare 14K yellow gold, green tourmaline and pearl bracelet signed by Everett Edward Oakes. The bracelet comprises nine comma-shaped flaring gold links, each set with either a tourmaline cabochon or a pearl. The gems are set in the notched collet-setting frequently employed by Oakes to show off a stone’s color and overall quality. The tourmalines have fine green color with moderate saturation and medium tone. The clarity is excellent for tourmalines of this type. The pearls are equally fine, with good shape and bright rose overtones. The design, with nearly a Retro feel, is a bit more modern than is often associated with Oakes, but the beadwork and notched collets are typical. The tongue of the concealed box clasp is marked “14K” and bears Oakes’ oak leaf signature.

Edward Everett Oakes (1891-1960) was perhaps the foremost Arts & Crafts jeweler in America. He was a member (and medallist) of the Boston Arts & Crafts Society, and became the first living artist to have a work acquired for the permanent collection of the Metropolitan Museum of Art. He trained with Frank Gardner Hale and worked for a few years with Josephine Hartwell Shaw. Oakes’ work shows a certain similarity with both Hale and Shaw. Most of his pieces are unsigned, but can often be identified based on their decorative motifs and construction techniques.

Origin: America, ca. 1930. Condition: excellent, one pearl link has been removed to shorten the bracelet to a normal length. Size: 7-5/8” long; 1/2" wide. Weight: 24.69 grams. Approximate Total Gemstone Weight: tourmaline, 8.95 cts.

$1250

A beautiful and large Mikimoto floral brooch of cultured pearls set in 14K white gold. Most Mikimoto brooches are set with 6-12 pearls, but this exceptional pin features thirty very fine pearls, ranging from 5.4 to 7.72 millimeters. The pearls are of the best quality, with cream body color and rose overtones. The luster is bright and the surfaces are minimally blemished. Using Mikimoto’s grading system, the quality is estimated to be AA. Most Mikimoto pins in light-colored metals are in sterling silver. It is very difficult to find white gold pins. The back is stamped with Mikimoto’s hallmark and is marked “WG14K”.

Origin: Japan, ca. 1960. Condition: excellent. Size: 2-1/2” x 2-3/16”. Weight: 20.9 grams.
