An 18K yellow gold brooch in an early Paloma Picasso design for Tiffany & Co. The pin depicts a bird—probably a dove—with its head turned toward the back and nestled into its own feathers in a resting position. This design shows how Picasso utilized the simplest of gently curving lines and unadorned gold surfaces to create strikingly graphic jewelry. The back is signed by Picasso and is also marked “©1981 Tiffany & Co. 18K”.

A stunning Tiffany & Co. ring by Jean Schlumberger, one of the great jewelry designers of the 20th century. He was Tiffany’s lead designer in the 1960s and was charged with creating nearly all of the company’s most exclusive pieces. His designs typically relied on naturalistic motifs. Here, two leaves are worked in platinum and studded with round brilliant-cut diamonds. The stems of the leaves are worked in 18K yellow gold and meld into the double shank that continues the organic motif. The diamonds are of very fine quality, VS clarity, G color. Schlumberger created several pieces using this motif, including the “Three Leaves Earrings” (currently available from Tiffany at $13,500), the “Five Leaves Brooch” ($16,500), the “Three Leaves Sapphire Earclips” ($62,000). The “Two Leaves Ring” currently retails for $4,400.

Origin: America. Condition: excellent, all original. Finger Size: 6-1/2. Size: 5/8” wide. Weight: 9.0 grams. Approximate Total Diamond Weight: .51 carat.

A magnificent 18K yellow gold brooch by one of the world’s most important goldsmiths. The flowing, undulating design is inspired by seawood, but it takes on a contemporary, sculptural feel when translated into gold. The front surface is acid-bathed to create a matte texture, while the reverse is highly polished. The design allows both textures to show, creating a wonderful contrast.

Michael Good is considered by his goldsmith peers to have perfected the technique of “anticlastic raising”, itself recognized as one of the most technically difficult and time-consuming methods of jewelry making. His pieces are represented in major museums and private collections throughout the world. Good still makes the “Lilliane” brooch, but his studio representatives indicate that it is a particularly rare piece because it is so difficult and time-consuming, and that they are usually made to order, rather than for stock. It is made in two sizes, this size being the larger. The brooch in this size currently sells for $2,000.

The anticastic raising process involves beating a piece of gold into a sheet, cutting it into the desired shape, and then using a series of hammers and shaped spikes to create a series of elliptical bends at right angles to each other (similar to the way a horse saddle is shaped). Good’s approach draws the gold out into a sturdy wire, so that the clasp becomes part of the design itself. He uses no findings (manufactured clasps, earwires, hinges, etc.) in his work.

Signed “M. Good” and marked “750” for 18K gold.

Origin: America, ca. 2000. Condition: excellent, all original. Size: 3-1/2” x 2”. Weight: 16.5 grams.

$1,950

A stunning pair of 18K yellow and white gold earrings by Tiffany & Co. and Faraone. The slightly elongated yellow gold hoops are edged in opposing white gold borders that cross in the middle and open into collet settings for brilliant navette-cut natural rubies. The stones have superb, rich color saturation and outstanding clarity, as would be expected. The stylized organic design is really very elegant. Faraone, one of the oldest and most luxurious of the Florentine jewelers, was purchased by Tiffany in the 1990s. Most of the designs created there were only available at the two Tiffany boutiques in Italy—one in Florence and another in Milan. Pieces signed both Tiffany and Faraone are quite difficult to find. The stores are now closed and the only Tiffany items sold in Italy are those that are available at every other Tiffany boutique worldwide. These earrings are fully marked with Italian 18K gold hallmarks, and also “Faraone” and “T & Co.”.

Origin: Italy, ca. 1990. Condition: excellent, all original. Size: 15/16” long; 1/2" wide. Weight: 19.5 grams. Approximate Total Gemstone Weight: .5 carat.
