$550

A very good multigem “Sputnik” ring in the style of H Stern. Stern, the world’s largest dealer in colored gemstones, created this design in the 1950s to showcase the wonderful array of colored gemstones available in the Brazilian mines. Amethysts, aquamarines, citrines, garnets, and green and pink tourmalines are collet-set above the yellow gold dome (this ring also includes an unusual and very pretty deep blue tourmaline). The resulting appearance was considered very modern and was popularly named after the early Russian space satellite “Sputnik”. Each ring has a unique look depending upon the particular selection and arrangement of the gems. This example includes an unusual and very pretty deep blue tourmaline that we have never seen in a Sputnik piece. Tested and guaranteed 18K.

Origin: Brazil, ca. 1960. Condition: excellent. Finger Size: 9. Size: 29/32” diameter. Weight: 6.1 grams. Approximate Total Gemstone Weight: tourmaline, 1.65 cts; garnet, 1.23 cts; citrine, 1.16 cts; amethyst, 1.16 cts; aquamarine, .87 ct.

A pretty vintage four-strand pearl bracelet, enhanced with 14K white gold spacers and a heart-shaped clasp. The pearls, ranging in size from 5.0 to 5.9 millimeters, have nice luster and cream/rose color and are slightly off-round. Each of the four spacers is set with three old European cut blue sapphires. The bright blue coloring of the sapphires makes a nice contrast with the milkiness of the pearls. The bracelet is finished with a wonderful large heart-shaped clasp prong-set with forty-three natural seed pearls. The seed pearls are of unusually nice quality and are well-matched for the pavé effect. The clasp is marked “14K”.

$695

A nice pair of modernist 14K yellow gold and pearl earrings. 5.2-millimeter pearl studs suspend faceted gold bars that, in turn, suspend open-work gold spheres studded with pearls. Each sphere comprises a dozen 4.9 millimeter cultured pearls of very good quality. The body color is cream with rose overtones. The luster is bright and the surfaces are smooth. Each of the spheres is completed with the addition of prong-set seed pearls. The spheres dangle freely and exhibit lots of movement. During the late 1950s and 1960s, scientific knowledge became an inspiration for jewelry designers who began turning pieces like “Sputnik” rings. The arrangement of the pearls and the underlying gold structure of these earrings is clearly based on atomic-level molecule models. Tested and guaranteed 14K.

Origin: America, ca. 1960. Condition: excellent, all original. Size: 1-3/8” long; 5/8” diameter. Weight: 8.5 grams.

A beautiful vintage pair of 18K yellow gold maple leaf earrings, each set with a diamond dew-drop. The gold surfaces are finely textured to simulate the porosity of real leaves and have intricate veining to highlight the effect. The diamonds are of fine quality, estimated at F color, VS1 clarity. The earrings have the adjustable clips frequently found on Tiffany earrings from the 1940s, and are hallmarked for George Schuler, who made much of Tiffany’s gold jewelry in that era. We’ve had these earrings along with a matching brooch (unsigned by Tiffany) in the original fitted Tiffany box, and we’ve had these earrings (signed by Tiffany without the box. Sometimes they are marked with only Schuler’s mark and sometimes they’re marked by both Schuler and Tiffany. The gold has a dark, nearly coppery color, often seen on late Retro pieces from Tiffany.
