A nice 18K yellow gold “Sputnik” ring, probably by H. Stern. The golden dome is set with a variety of semi-precious gemstones, including aquamarine, green tourmaline, citrine, and amethyst. Each Sputnik ring has a unique appearance, depending upon the particular combination of gems chosen and the color of the gold. This example has richly colored stones in a subdued palette. Sputnik jewelry was created by H. Stern, Brazil’s largest dealer in colored gemstones, and was quite popular in the early years of the space race, hence the nickname. The bottom of the dome has a delicate scrolled gallery that connects to the shank. Marked "18K".Origin: Brazil, ca. 1955. A delightful and heavy early 1950s 18K yellow gold brooch in the form of a stylized bird. The body is made from a oval cabochon turquoise, while the head and wing feathers are strongly textured in an artichoke-like pattern. A cabochon sapphire surrounded by small single-cut diamonds set in white gold represents the eye. The tailfeathers are represented in white gold set with diamonds. The bird roosts on a branch accented with a flower comprising a turquoise center and diamond petals. Novelty pins featuring stylized animals were made popular by the French jewelers—especially Cartier and Van Cleef & Arpel—before spreading to America. The pin is very nicely crafted and the gemstones are of high quality. The pinstem is marked “14K”, but the brooch itself tests and is guaranteed 18K gold.Origin: America, ca. 1955. Condition: excellent, all original. Size: 1-5/8” x 1-1/4”. Weight: 18.5 grams. Approximate Total Gemstone Weight: diamond, .75 carat; sapphire, .13 carat; turquoise, 9.10 carats.

An exuberant mid-century cocktail ring set with semi-precious stones in various hues. The center features a 1.9 carat peridot capping a wonderful buttercup setting, in turn surrounded by more than 15.0 carats of collet-set garnets, kunzite, pink and green tourmaline, olivine, zircon and citrine. The famed jeweler and gemstone dealer H. Stern created a vogue for multi-gem pieces in the 1950s. This ring may well be one of his products, although it is not signed. The quality of the workmanship is superb, particularly in the ornate buttercup setting and the delicately millegrained edges of the collet settings. The gemstones are of the finest quality, with excellent color saturation and clarity. The gold has a slightly rosy tint that contrasts nicely with the stones. Tested and guaranteed 18K.Origin: probably Brazil, ca. 1960. Condition: excellent, all original. Ring Size: 7. Size: 1-3/16” diameter; 3/4" high. Weight: 13.5 grams. Approximate Total Gemstone Weight: tourmaline, 1.0 carat; citrine, 1.3 carats; garnet, 1.2 carats; kunzite, 1.5 carats; zircon, .75 carat; olivine, .5 carat; peridot, 1.9 carats.
