$1295

A delightful and heavy early 1950s 18K yellow gold brooch in the form of a stylized bird. The body is made from a oval cabochon turquoise, while the head and wing feathers are strongly textured in an artichoke-like pattern. A cabochon sapphire surrounded by small single-cut diamonds set in white gold represents the eye. The tailfeathers are represented in white gold set with diamonds. The bird roosts on a branch accented with a flower comprising a turquoise center and diamond petals. Novelty pins featuring stylized animals were made popular by the French jewelers—especially Cartier and Van Cleef & Arpel—before spreading to America. The pin is very nicely crafted and the gemstones are of high quality. The pinstem is marked “14K”, but the brooch itself tests and is guaranteed 18K gold.

Origin: America, ca. 1955. Condition: excellent, all original. Size: 1-5/8” x 1-1/4”. Weight: 18.5 grams. Approximate Total Gemstone Weight: diamond, .75 carat; sapphire, .13 carat; turquoise, 9.10 carats.
