A marvelous 19th century French 18K yellow gold double locket, the covers worked in carved rock crystal and lapis lazuli. The front cover features a plaque of rock crystal with lapidary cutting at the edges and tiny intaglio engraved flowers across the face. The other side features a large oval plaque of lapis lazuli, very nicely marked with bits of sparkling pyrite. Both stones are set in a chased gold border engraved with star designs. The interior of the locket has a secondary cover, so the locket can accomodate several different portraits, or perhaps a lock of hair in addition to a portrait. Either the clear or blue side can be worn on the outside. The bail is marked with French "tete d'aigle hallmarks" for 18K gold, and have an unidentified maker's mark.Origin: France, ca. 1860. Condition: excellent, all original. Size: 1" x 7/8" (excluding bail). Weight: 8.9 grams.

A late Victorian brooch/pendant in the Arts & Crafts style featuring an Australian semi-black boulder opal of exceptional quality. The gemstone has large strong flashes of green and blue, moderated with some violet and just a hint of orangey-red. The medium-dark body color creates an excellent contrast to the spectral colors, and the play-of-color shows equally in all directions. The boulder opal is cabochon cut and incorporates areas of the sandstone matrix (the host rock) on both the front and back sides (25% on the front and 60% on the back). Australian opals were a relatively recent discovery at the time Arts & Crafts jewelry became popular and the matrix appearance of some boulder opals was especially suitable to the style. The brooch retains the original extended pinstem and a movable bale that allows the piece to be worn as either a brooch or pendant. Tested and guaranteed 15K.Origin: England, ca. 1880. Condition: excellent, no cracking or crazing, there is natural pitting to the surface characteristic to the type of gemstone. Size: 1” x 13/16”. Opal Size: 24 x 19 x 7 mm. Approximate Opal Weight: 18.38 carats.

A lovely Victorian tortoise shell pique pendant in a heart shape. The puffed surface is worked with gold and silver inlay in an ornate floral pattern within a scalloped inlaid border. The pattern of two flowers joined together by a ribbon, and of course, the overall heart shape suggest that the pendant would have been given as a love token. The tortoise has very nice markings and translucency when held to the light.Origin: America or England, ca. 1860. Condition: excellent, no inlay loss, no chipping or cracking, (the line visible in the last image is a surface scratch only--not a crack). Size: 1-1/16” x 1-3/16”.

A very fine 14K rose gold brooch mounted with a Scottish Terrier carved from banded agate. The dog's head is beautifully rendered, using the stone's natural banded coloring to represent the dark colored muzzle and ears that contrast with the brighter carnelian of the fur. The eyes are represented by small round cut demantoid garnets set in a manner that nearly completely hides the gold collets holding the stones. The workmanship of the carving is first-rate. The setting is rather simple an does not detract from the beauty of the hardstone carving.Faberge was a leading creator of hardstone carvings, and used carvings created in his own workshops as the shops of others. In Paris, Cartier was determined to compete with Faberge and also produced hardstone carvings. The Cartier versions, however, tended to be a little less realistic and rarely relied on the natural color variations of the stone material. The coloring technique strongly suggests that this carving is the product of a Russian workshop contemporary with Faberge, and possibly that of the master himself. There appears to be a rubbed-out hallmark on the back side. This is occasionally seen in Russian pieces that had their marks obliterated shortly after the Revolution as their owners tried to smuggle jewels out of the country. Tested and guaranteed to be 56 zlotniks (slightly purer than 14K). Origin: Russia, ca. 1905. Condition: excellent, all original. Size: 2-9/16" x 1-1/16". Weight: 15.3 grams. Approximate Total Demantoid Weight: .1 ct.

A very fine French Belle Epoque 18K yellow gold brooch set with diamonds, blue sapphires and demantoid garnets around a central sugarloaf cabochon 3.59-carat peridot. The demantoids exhibit the desirable horsetail inclusions characteristic of Russian stones. The combination of blue sapphires and the bright grassy green of the demantoids and peridot is very pleasing. All the smaller stones are old mine cuts. Six small rose-cut diamonds are collet-set in silver. The back retains the original c-clasp and extended pinstem which is fully stamped with French "tete d'aigle" hallmarks for 18K gold and with an illegible goldsmith's mark.Origin: France, ca. 1890. Condition: excellent, all original. Size: 2" x 19/32". Weight: 6.8 grams. Approximate Total Gemstone Weight: diamond, .15 carat; sapphire, .4 carat; demantoid, .46 carat; peridot, 3.59 carats.

An exquisite diamond- and fancy sapphire-set 15K yellow gold clasp highlights this strand of late Victorian cultured pearls. The round clasp features three antique cushion- and round-cut natural fancy-color sapphires highlighted with three old mine-cut diamonds. The sapphires are in pleasing hues of blue, green and pink. The blue sapphire has light tone and moderately-light saturation, while the pink and green sapphires are more strongly colored. All the sapphires have excellent polish with high luster, and show no signs of heat treatment. The small old mine cut diamonds are of nice quality, ranging from I to K in color. The clasp is currently fitted for a single strand, but can easily be converted for use with a double strand. The pearls in the strand have a strong ivory color with rose overtones and range from 3 to 5.8mm. Unlike most graduated strands, the largest pearls are strung nearest the clasp, because the clasp is intended to be worn. Frankly, we’d recommend placing this spectacular clasp on an equally spectacular strand of pearls.Origin: England, ca. 1900. Condition: clasp excellent; pearls show considerable wear. Size: clasp, 1/2" diameter (excluding bales); strand, 17-1/2” long. Approximate Total Gemstone Weight: diamond, .18 ct; blue sapphire, .63 ct; pink sapphire, .45 ct; green sapphire, .43 ct.

A beautiful pair of Victorian 14K yellow gold earrings, each featuring old European round cut diamonds in buttercup settings surrounding an oval mixed-cut ruby. The diamonds are separated by radiating lines of black taille d’eparge enamel. The rubies have medium-dark, moderately saturated, strongly purplish-red. Their noticeable fluorescence makes the rubies even stronger in sunlight. The stones have characteristic intact silk inclusions that indicate they have not been heat treated, and they are probably from the Mogok region of Burma. The diamonds are also of very good quality, estimated at F color, VVS clarity. The size of the earrings makes them appropriate for daytime wear, but the way they hang below the earlobe also gives them a dressy quality. Tested and guaranteed 14K.Origin: America, ca. 1890. Condition: excellent, ear wires are probably replacements. Size: 11/16” diameter. Weight: 5.8 grams. Approximate Total Gemstone Weight: diamond, .6 carat; ruby, .54 carat.
