$550

A very fine Victorian 18K yellow gold perfume flask or vinaigrette intended to be worn as a pendant. The container is in a slightly heart-shaped flask form with a hinged cap. Both sides are enameled with bouquets of blue and white flowers and green foliage. The bouquet on the front is centered with a small collet-set old European cut diamond that adds just a touch of sparkle. The whole is suspended from a double chain. The piece might have been filled with a scent, but more likely, it was filled with a "vinaigrette"--a bracing aromatic liquid that was used to protect a delicate lady from some of the more objectionable odors encountered on 19th century streets. Tested and guaranteed 18K gold.

Origin: America, ca. 1860. Condition: excellent, slight wear to enamel visible with a loupe. Size: 1-1/8" x 3/4" (excluding chain). Weight: 4.5 grams.

A nice tiger claw set in a Victorian 18K yellow gold pendant mounting. The setting is beautifully engraved in a paisley motif. Tiger claw jewelry became very popular after Queen Victoria's coronation as Empress of India. Hunters kept the claws as souvenirs of the hunt and had them set into jewelry for loved ones at home in England and America. The mounting is marked 18K.

Origin: America, ca. 1870. Condition: excellent, all original. Size: 1-1/4" x 1-1/4".

Victorians were fascinated by astronomical events such as the regular appearance of comets. Halley’s comet, in particular, created a world-wide sensation and inspired jewelry designs for many years. Comet jewelry, such as this brooch worked in 14K gold and turquoise, usually displays a rounded head attached to a tail. This piece is quite unusual, however, in that it interprets the traditional comet shape in the Etruscan Revival style. The micro-beaded and wirework decoration is of the finest quality. The gold surfaces are enhanced with the “bloomed” Russian finish. Tested and guaranteed 14K.

Origin: America, ca. 1860. Condition: excellent, all original. Size: 2-1/8” long. Weight: 4.25 grams.

$1950

An exceptional 18K yellow gold locket necklace in the Etruscan Revival taste from the reign of Emperor Napoleon III. The oval locket's front cover is encrusted with an ornate pattern of twisted wirework and beading surrounding a central row of natural seed pearls. The locket is suspended within an oval frame decorated floral appliques against a stippled background. The frame suspends foxtail chains with ball terminals. The entire piece is suspended from a bale that echoes the decorative treatment of the frame and a foxtail chain with ball fittings. The locket has never been monogrammed. This is one of the most unusual Etruscan Revival lockets we've seen. The workmanship is of the first order, and despite its intricacy, the piece is still very wearable. The piece is stamped with the "tete d'aigle" hallmark for 18K gold.

Origin: France, ca. 1850. Condition: excellent, all original, no monogram, light normal dings to the back cover. Size: locket, 1" x 3/4"; frame with tassels, 2" x 1"; frame and bale, 3" long; chain, 18" long. Weight: 18.0 grams.

$2495

A gorgeous 18K yellow gold circle brooch surrounding a spray of diamond flowers tied with a golden ribbon. The brooch dates to the reign of Emperor Napoleon III. One flower is centered with a .39-carat rose cut diamond and the other two are set with .17-carat old mine-cut diamonds. The remaining 31 diamonds in the brooch are a mix of rose-cuts, old mine-cuts and single-cuts. The stones are of particularly good quality for the period, with bright color and excellent clarity. The piece has considerably more sparkle than most French pieces of the era. The ribbon at the base is realistically engraved. The sides of the brooch have a very nicely-worked saw-pierced gallery. The back retains the original extended pinstem and c-clasp, stamped with the "tete d'aigle" mark for 18K.

Origin: France, ca. 1855. Condition: excellent, all original. Size: 1-1/4" diameter. Weight: 9.5 grams. Approximate Total Diamond Weight: 1.97 carats.

A stunning and magnificent pair of French 18K yellow gold earrings, the domes ornately engraved and accented with opaque black basse taille enamel tracery. The center of each dome is set with old mine-cut diamonds, one weighing approximately .63 carat and the other, approximately .69 carat. The large diamonds are surrounded by 1-pt diamonds to create a starburst pattern. The back edges of the domes are finished with a finely-pierced decorative gallery. The diamonds have particularly good color and clarity for stones of this period. The cutting suggests that the stones may, in fact, be at least several decades older than the mid-19th century settings. This was very common for pieces featuring larger diamonds, because they were often removed from old pieces of jewelry that were no longer in style and re-set to create new jewels. Tested and guaranteed 18K gold.

Origin: France, ca. 1850. Condition: excellent, a 1mm area of enamel wear. Size: 9/16" diameter. Weight: 4.5 grams. Approximate Total Diamond Weight: 1.5 carats.

$395

A fascinating Victorian brooch set in 14K yellow gold. The octagonal plaque with canted corners appears to be made of opaque black glass and is inset with an ornate glass design worked in the pietra dura method. The translucent design is backed with gold foil to create a subtle glittery effect. The setting is very simple and does not detract from the more important enamel work. Tested and guaranteed 14K gold.

Origin: Europe, possibly Switzerland, ca. 1850. Condition: excellent, all original, very light surface scratching visible with a loupe. Size: 1-1/8" x 3/4".

$250

Lovely late Victorian 18K yellow gold pendant, the outer frame formed as bound reeds in the Louis XVI style, and centered with a four-leaf clover. The clover's leaves are set with pear-cut amethysts. The stones have an intense pink color that nearly suggests pink tourmaline, but the stones are clearly amethyst. The edges of the settings are nicely millegrained for additional detail. The bale is marked with French 18K gold hallmarks.

Origin: France, ca. 1900. Condition: excellent, all original, slight surface wear to amethysts visible under a loupe. Size: 13/16" diameter. Weight: 2.5 grams. Approximate Total Gemstone Weight: .84 carat.
