Stunning Victorian 18K gold cameo brooch featuring a male portrait carved from angelskin coral. Male cameos are very rare and usually depict either gods from the Classical pantheon or historical figures. This example is very similar to the Van Dyck portraits of King Charles II. The details of the lace collar, heavy neck chain, ruffled shirt, beard and hair are extraordinary. The cameo is very deeply carved with the white figure standing out beautifully against the soft pink background. The cameo is set in a simple gold setting enhanced only with a narrow line of wire-twist decoration. Tested and guaranteed 18K gold.Origin: cameo probably Italy; setting probably American, ca. 1850. Condition: excellent, no damage to cameo, the clasp is a replacement. Size: 2-1/32” x 1-13/16” x 5/8”.

A very high quality Victorian shell cameo depicting the goddess Diana in romanticized classical dress. She is identifiable by two of her chief attributes, the crescent moon tiara and her bow, which is just visible over her shoulder. The quality of carving is superb, especially in the hair. The artist used the natural color of the shell to impart a subtle color to her hair that contrasts with the milky whiteness of her skin. The 10K gold frame is engraved in a floral pattern. The back has an early safety clasp, and a bale hook added at a later date. Tested and guaranteed 10K gold.Origin: America, ca. 1890. Condition: excellent, no damage to shell. Size: 1-15/16” x 1-5/8”.

Top-of-the-line Victorian brooch fashioned as an Algerian knot with suspended tassels and centering an oval amethyst cabochon inlaid with a pearl-set gold star. The amethyst conceals and crystal-covered hair or portrait case that is accessed from the back of the pin. The Algerian knot motif became popular around 1850 and this is a particularly fine example. The gold is worked with repousse decoration to resemble a heavy silk cord that is then tied into the knot pattern. The loose ends of the cord suspend beautifully worked foxtail tassels with caps decorated to match the texture of the knot. The amethyst is collet set and the outside of the collet is enhanced with an elegant twisted wire motif. The amethyst is further enhanced with an inlaid gold six-point star bead-set with a very high quality small natural pearl. In the Victorian era, amethyst was a very expensive stone and large stones were used sparingly. The back of the brooch retains the original extended pinstem and c-clasp. This brooch was obviously an important piece, and is presented in its original fitted leather case. Tested and guaranteed 18K gold.Origin: America, ca. 1850. Condition: nearly mint. Size: 1-1/2” x 2-3/4”. Weight: 17.5 grams. Approximate Total Gemstone Weight: 20 carats.
