A stunning Belle Epoque Franco-Russian 18K yellow gold necklace set with diamonds, demantoid garnets and amethyst. The necklace comprises a pair of curblink chains flanking a central gem-set plaque suspending a gem-set pendant. At the upper ends, the plaque begins with a pair of collet-set old mine cut diamonds of .4 and .35 carats, estimated at VS2 clarity and J color. A pair of diamond-set horseshoe shaped elements hang below, in turn suspending a series of open rings alternately set with rose cut diamonds and old mine cut demantoid garnets. The rings end in another pair of collet-set old mine cut diamonds of .49 and .42 carats, estimated at VS2/VS1 clarity and H/J color. These two stones are connected by a horizontal scalloped plaque featuring a row of prong-set demantoid garnets over a stylized leaf pattern worked in diamonds and demantoids. The drop pendant features a 16.48 carat square cushion cut Siberian amethyst surrounded by a stylized border set with with demantoids and diamonds. The setting is of the finest quality. Each element is fully articulated and moves independently of the others. The edges of each element, as well as the edges of collets are millegrained for a fine finish. The back of the central plaque and pendant settings feature a caged construction. This technique provides strength for the heavier elements of the necklace, while maintaing a light appearance. It also serves to push the pendant away from the skin a bit so it can move more freely. The stones are superb. The featured amethyst is the rich, clear, intense purple found primarily in stones originating in Siberia. It has flawless clarity and the cutting has superior symmetry and polish. The demantoids, likewise stones originating in Russia, show a range of color from light to very intense. The smaller diamonds, ranging in size from one to five points, are of fine quality, mostly in the VVS-VS clarity range and F-I color range. The design employs a total of 153 diamonds, 66 demantoid garnets, and one amethyst. The stones include old mine, old cushion, square cushion, and rose cuts. The necklace bears the French "tete d'aigle" guarantee mark for 18K gold and belonged to a Russian family. The amethyst and demantoids are certainly Russian in origin, and the diamonds may be Russian, as well. This particular color combination was a favored theme in late Imperial Russian jewelry, sparked in part by its popularity among the younger crown princesses of Europe including Alexandra in England and Alexandra in Russia. There was a tremendous cross-fertilization of Russian and French decorative arts during the 18th and 19th centuries. Many of the Russian nobility and upper class purchased their jewels from Parisian jewelers. It is most likely that this necklace was made on special order in Paris (hence the presence of the guarantee mark, but the absence of the maker's mark), and then transported back to Russia. Given the use of predominantly Russian gems and the assortment of older cuts used, it's likely that the stones were taken from an older piece of jewelry already in the possession of the necklace's owner and were re-set in Paris into this piece. Origin: France/Russia, ca. 1890. Condition: excellent, the clasp is replaced. Size: overall length, 20"; plaque width, 4-13/16"; pendant, 1-1/4" x 13/16". Weight: 41.5 grams. Approximate Total Gemstone Weight: diamond, 4.6 carats; demantoid garnet, 1.98 carats; amethyst, 16.48 carats.

A pretty 18Kyellow gold pin in the shape of a salamander from the reign of Emperor Napoleon III. Animal brooches were very popular in the mid-19th century, and reptiles were especially favored. The salamander has a long history in France, and was the personal symbol of King François whose rule began in the late 15th century. This example is beautifully engraved with delicate scales, claws, and eyes. The back is set with a line of alternating seed pearls and Persian turquoise cabochons. The head is set with a larger turquoise. The original clasp is marked with the “tête de cheval” hallmark used only outside Paris between 1838 and 1919.Origin: France, ca. 1850. Condition: excellent. Size: 1-7/16” long. Weight: 3.5 grams.

A wonderful and extremely rare Victorian 15K rose gold brooch set with Scottish agate. The brooch is in the form of the 19th century Prince of Wales’ crown enclosing the traditional feathers in fleur-de-lys arrangement, over a banner with the legend “Ich Dien”. The feathers are set with jasper and bloodstone. The engraved decoration of the gold is first-rate. The back bears a registry mark, dating the brooch to 1891. In 1891, Queen Victoria’s eldest son, the future Edward VII, celebrated the fiftieth anniversary of his investitute as Prince of Wales. Due to his mother’s longevity, however, Edward was the first Prince of Wales to reach that mark. Agate jewelry set in gold is quite uncommon, and this is the only example we’ve found of this particular design. Tested and guaranteed 15K.Origin: England, 1891. Condition: excellent, all original. A wonderful Victorian pendant comprising a pair of small tiger's claws mounted in 21K yellow gold. The gold cap is adorned with a fringe of moveable spheres that matches the line beading that extends down the center of the mounting. A loop at either end of the mounting can be attached to a chain. Tiger claw jewelry became popular after Queen Victoria's coronation as Empress of India. Sometimes, these hunting trophies were taken back to England to be custom-mounted by English jewelers, but when the hunter was planning to remain in India for an indefinite period, the claws were often mounted by Indian goldsmiths (as in this example) and sent back to loved ones in England as souvenirs of great "colonial adventures". Tested and guaranteed 21K gold.Origin: India, ca. 1860. Condition: excellent, claws show normal age splitting, all original. Size: 1-5/8" x 1". Weight: 6.5 grams. NOTE: This item cannot be shipped outside the United States.

A magnificent early Victorian locket of carved elephant ivory. The carving is of such a level that the French city of Dieppe, renowned since the middle ages as a center of ivory carving, is the most likely origin. The workmanship is so perfect that when the cover is closed, the viewer cannot see that the piece is a locket. The hinge is completely concealed, and the only visible mechanical piece is a small gilt pin near the bottom that acts as a sort of latch to keep the cover closed. Many carved ivory pieces were pegged together from several different pieces of material, but this example is worked from a single, solid block of ivory. The carving of the flower stems is nearly paper thin and there is absolutely no damage. The ivory has gained a beautiful natural lustrous patina, darker on the back where it was in contact with skin.Origin: France, ca. 1830. Condition: excellent, no losses, no cracks. Size: 2-1/4" x 1-1/2" (exluding ivory jump ring). NOTE: This item cannot be shipped outside the U.S.
