An amazing Troisième République 18K yellow gold and bloodstone fob seal. The bloodstone formed the floor of a golden caged enclosure that houses a ferocious lion wrestling a green enameled serpent. The snake has twined itself completely around the big cat, but the lion has his paw holding the snake down and has opened his jaws to deliver the final blow. The bloodstone is very nicely marked with bright spots of red against the blackish-green background. The snake’s scaly body is partially covered with translucent green enamel. (It is difficult to tell if the enamel was used only to highlight part of the body, or whether it is partially flaked away. In either case, the contrast with the lion’s gold body is very attractive.) The bale is marked with the French “tête d’aigle” hallmark for 18K gold.Origin: France, ca. 1880. Condition: excellent, never monogrammed. Size: 1-9/32” x 1-1/16” x 1-3/8”. Weight: 24.0 grams.

A wonderful Victorian 18K yellow gold watch fob featuring a double-sided lapis lazuli swivel fob surmounted by a gold lioness wrestling with a serpent. The lioness’s tail curls under to become one hinge for the swivel, while the snake’s tail forms the other. The seal stone is set in a gold collar delicately engraved in a foliate pattern. Since it is a fairly soft stone, the use of lapis as a fob seal is rather unusual. Both sides are engraved—one with a monogram and the other with a monogram surrounding an anchor. Both monograms have the same last initial, but different first initials, likely indicating that one side was engraved at a later date by whomever inherited the seal from its original owner. Tested and guaranteed 18K gold.Origin: European, ca. 1840. Condition: excellent, contemporary jump ring, no damage to stone, fine detail. Size: 1-1/2” x 1-1/8” (not including jump ring). Weight: 14.75 grams.

A gorgeous early Victorian demi-parure consisting of a brooch and pair of earrings. Concave round white chalcedony discs are encircled in 18K yellow gold settings accented with black enamel. The center of each chalcedony disc is set with a delicately carved coral flower reminiscent of a pansy, which is, in turn, set with a natural half-pearl in a star-shaped gold mounting. The strong color contrast is very attractive. The earrings, especially, show the translucent quality of the chalcedony to great effect. The brooch retains the original extended pinstem and c-clasp, and the earrings retain their original wires and c-clasps. Tested and guaranteed 18K gold.Ca. 1840. Condition: excellent, all original, no damage. Size: brooch, 1-5/16” diameter; earrings, 13/16” diameter, 1-3/8” long to top of earwire.
