A fantastic late Victorian watch pin featuring a mythological griffin. This is, by far, the best griffin brooch we’ve ever seen. The entire surface is hand-chased to create realistic feathery, furry and scaly textures. The beast is cast very three-dimensionally for added detail. The top of his unfurled wing is accented with rose-cut diamonds set in silver and he stands on foliage likewise set with diamonds. He grasps a 4.0mm pearl in his jaws. The back retains the original watch hanger, pinstem and trombone clasp. The back is marked for 18K.Origin: Europe, possibly France, ca. 1890. Condition: mint. Size: 1-1/4” diameter. Weight: 17.5 grams. Approximate Total Gemstone Weight: .1 carat.

Fabulous early Victorian brooch in 18K yellow gold, set with coral and diamonds. The oval pin is framed in a pierced border created by overlapping arches, the intersections enhanced with applied gold beads. The center features a dome of turquoise enamel set in an ornate Moorish-style motif with oval angelskin coral cabochons interspersed with small rose-cut diamonds. The color contrast between the pale pink coral and the vivid turquoise enamel, and the subtle sparkle of the diamonds against the slightly matte finish of the gold is stunning. The back retains the original extended pinstem, c-clasp, and ring for attaching a safety pin. Tested and guaranteed 18K gold.Origin: probably England, ca. 1850. Condition: excellent, no enamel damage, all original. Size: 1-9/16” x 1-5/16”. Weight: 14.5 grams.

The back retains the original extended pinstem and c-clasp marked “14K” and also with an illegible maker’s mark.Origin: America, ca. 1890. Condition: excellent, all original. Size: 1-1/8” x 15/16”. A phenomenal Victorian 18K yellow gold brooch in the Etruscan Revival taste. The brooch features a large azurite-malachite cabochon weighing more than 60 carats. The natural fissures, and blue and green color mottling is striking, especially against the richness of the gold. The setting is one of the best Etruscan frames we’ve seen, befitting a minerological specimen that would have been considered extravagantly exotic (probably originating in Afghanistan). The stone is set in a collet surrounded with a border of beaded rosettes flanked on either side with delicate twisted wire. The frame is decorated at compass points with shell motifs outlined with twisted wirework. Cyma scrolls and graduated beading fill the space between the shells. The surface of the gold has the slightly matte bloomed finish that lends the appearance of antiquity to the better Etruscan pieces. The back of the brooch retains the original c-clasp and extended pinstem. Tested and guaranteed 18K gold.Origin: America or England, ca. 1860. Condition: excellent, the border has two of the tiny rosettes and a tiny portion of one cyma scroll missing, but these are noticeable only upon very close inspection. Size: 2” x 1-11/16”. Weight: 19.75 grams.

A small Victorian 14K yellow gold pin in the form of a tiger’s head. The snarling face is very detailed and the animal appears very powerful. The eyes are set with tiny bright green stones to suggest emeralds. The small size of the pin makes it particularly appropriate for wear on a lapel. The pinstem and safety clasp are not original, and the pin was probably originally a stickpin.Origin: America, ca. 1880. Condition: excellent; pinstem and clasp replaced. Size: 5/8” x 11/16”. Weight: 2.5 grams.

A rare Victorian 14K yellow gold stick pin featuring a reverse-carved Essex crystal depicting a Chihuahua. Various dog breeds were depicted in Essex crystals, but this is the only piece we’ve seen with a dog that looks like a Chihuahua. The round setting, with its simple but finely crafted rope-twist border highlights the carved crystal. The colors are strong. The background appears to be silvered instead of the more usual mother-of-pearl. Tested and guaranteed 14K gold.Origin: America, ca. 1885. Condition: some oxidation to painted details. Size: head, 13/16” diameter; overall length, 2-3/4”. Weight: 6.75 grams.

A gorgeous Imperial Austrian 18K yellow gold brooch set with a reverse-carved Essex crystal depicting a pansy. Essex crystals were very popular for depicting horses, dogs and various hunting themes, but were not often used with floral motifs. This example is nicely carved and painted. The crystal is set in a simple ropetwist frame. The back retains the original extended pinstem and c-clasp. The clasp is marked with Austrian hallmarks used toward the end of the Imperial era. Essex crystals are more common in English and American jewelry than in Continental European pieces.Origin: Austria, ca. 1900. Condition: excellent. Size: 7/8” diameter. Weight: 4.5 grams.

Gorgeous 2nd Empire 18K yellow gold and diamond brooch in the form of a pansy. The Empress Eugénie was a devoted follower of diamonds and set the style for delicate floral brooches of this type during the early part of her husband’s reign. The style is marked by an increased realism in the appearance of the blossom. The petals, leaves and the lower part of the stem are encrusted with rose-cut diamonds, while the blossom is centered by a 1/3-carat old mine cut diamond in a prong-setting. During this period, the gold was overlaid with silver to highlight the white color of diamonds. Many of the jewels from this period are dark and without much sparkle, but this piece has a really lively feel with terrific sparkle. The back is marked with the “tete d’aigle” guarantee for 18K gold and has an unidentified jeweler’s mark.Origin: France, ca. 1850. Condition: excellent, all original. Size: 1-1/2” x 13/16”.
