A small Victorian 14K yellow gold pin in the form of a tiger’s head. The snarling face is very detailed and the animal appears very powerful. The eyes are set with tiny bright green stones to suggest emeralds. The small size of the pin makes it particularly appropriate for wear on a lapel. The pinstem and safety clasp are not original, and the pin was probably originally a stickpin.Origin: America, ca. 1880. Condition: excellent; pinstem and clasp replaced. Size: 5/8” x 11/16”. Weight: 2.5 grams.

A rare Victorian 14K yellow gold stick pin featuring a reverse-carved Essex crystal depicting a Chihuahua. Various dog breeds were depicted in Essex crystals, but this is the only piece we’ve seen with a dog that looks like a Chihuahua. The round setting, with its simple but finely crafted rope-twist border highlights the carved crystal. The colors are strong. The background appears to be silvered instead of the more usual mother-of-pearl. Tested and guaranteed 14K gold.Origin: America, ca. 1885. Condition: some oxidation to painted details. Size: head, 13/16” diameter; overall length, 2-3/4”. Weight: 6.75 grams.

A gorgeous Imperial Austrian 18K yellow gold brooch set with a reverse-carved Essex crystal depicting a pansy. Essex crystals were very popular for depicting horses, dogs and various hunting themes, but were not often used with floral motifs. This example is nicely carved and painted. The crystal is set in a simple ropetwist frame. The back retains the original extended pinstem and c-clasp. The clasp is marked with Austrian hallmarks used toward the end of the Imperial era. Essex crystals are more common in English and American jewelry than in Continental European pieces.Origin: Austria, ca. 1900. Condition: excellent. Size: 7/8” diameter. Weight: 4.5 grams.

Gorgeous 2nd Empire 18K yellow gold and diamond brooch in the form of a pansy. The Empress Eugénie was a devoted follower of diamonds and set the style for delicate floral brooches of this type during the early part of her husband’s reign. The style is marked by an increased realism in the appearance of the blossom. The petals, leaves and the lower part of the stem are encrusted with rose-cut diamonds, while the blossom is centered by a 1/3-carat old mine cut diamond in a prong-setting. During this period, the gold was overlaid with silver to highlight the white color of diamonds. Many of the jewels from this period are dark and without much sparkle, but this piece has a really lively feel with terrific sparkle. The back is marked with the “tete d’aigle” guarantee for 18K gold and has an unidentified jeweler’s mark.Origin: France, ca. 1850. Condition: excellent, all original. Size: 1-1/2” x 13/16”.

A very fine mid-19th century diamond, emerald and pearl brooch in the form of a clover. Each of the three leaves is set with rose-cut and old mine-cut diamonds, centered by prong-set emeralds. The leaves are gathered around a very lustrous deep cream 4.5mm natural pearl. The stem is also set with diamonds. The emeralds have deep green coloring with only very light inclusions. The 45 diamonds are G-H color and range from VS1 to SI clarity. The brooch is constructed, in the typical 19th century manner, of 18K yellow gold with a layer of silver over the top. The silver highlights the brilliance of the diamonds. The overall coloring of this brooch is quite bright and considerably more sparkly than many other pieces from the period. The back retains the original c-clasp and slightly extended pinstem.Origin: Europe, ca. 1840. Condition: excellent, all original. Size: 1” x 1”. Weight: 3.5 grams. Approximate Total Gemstone Weight: diamond, 1.0 carat; emerald, .75 carat.

A stunning Victorian 18K gold locket in the shape of an elongated heart and centering a painted enamel plaque. The heart is delicately engraved along the outer edges and around the enameled plaque. The sentimental enamel illustrates a lovebird surrounded with bowers of roses delivering a love note. It is very finely worked with outstanding detail and bright, cheerful colors. The outer edge of the image is framed in opaque black champleve enamel. The heart is surmounted with an ornate pierced gallery that rises to the bale. The back of the locket is engraved to match the front, but in place of the enamel plaque is an ornately engraved gold door. The hinged door opens to reveal a hidden locket. It might have been used to hold a photo, but because of the shape it was more likely used to store a lock of the beloved’s hair. The quality and design of the enamel would suggest that the piece is Swiss. Tested and guaranteed 18K gold.Origin: probably Switzerland, ca. 1850. Condition: enamel is perfect, a small ding on the left edge of the heart. Size: 1-1/8” wide; 2” long (not including bale). Weight: 9.0 grams.
