A lovely solid bronze jewel box highlighted with gilding. The surfaces are decorated in the Renaissance style with acanthus leaf volutes, fleur-de-lis and roses. Boxes such as these were made as tourist souvenirs for wealthy travelers during the 19th century. They were often decorated to match an important building, monument or other artifact. The source for this particular décor is unknown. The bottom and sides of the box’s interior are lined with the original claret-colored silk velvet. It is likely that the lid, too, was originally lined. Origin: Europe, ca. 1860. Condition: excellent, sharp detail. Size: 5-7/8” x 3-1/8” x 3”. |
