A fine, very heavy Burle Marx 18K rose gold and amethyst bracelet. Haroldo Burle Marx was particularly known for his use of large gemstones, sometimes faceted in the traditional manner and sometimes carved into free-form shapes. This bracelet is worked more in the former style, but the top facets of the amethysts have a gently convex buff cut instead of the usual flat table. This cutting style softens the outlines of the stones and is very much in keeping with Marx's aesthetic from the 1960s. The amethysts are set between parallel rows of herringbone chain, and are bordered with a matching motif. The amethysts have exceptional, deep violet color and even coloration throughout. The rose tint of the gold nicely complements the amethysts. The slide clasp is marked "Burle Marx 750".

Marx worked in his native Brazil, and his only international boutique was at the Watergate Hotel in Washington, DC. He was chosen by the Brazilian government to create gifts for visiting heads of state and their wives, including Empress Nagako of Japan, Empress Farah Diba of Iran Queen Margarethe of Denmark and Prime Minister Indira Gandhi of India. He was also a favorit jeweler of Natalie Wood and Merle Oberon. OPne of his most important commissions was a gem-encrusted cross for Pope John Paul II.

Origin: Brazil, ca. 1960. Condition: excellent. Dimensions: 7-3/8" long; 1" wide. Weight: 72.3 grams. Approximate Total Gemstone Weight: 101.86 cts.
