Stunning 18K yellow gold foxtail chain necklace, the double chains enhanced with a pair of slides and suspending tassel drops, dating from the 2nd Empire under Napoleon III. The barrel-shaped box clasp is decorated with white, blue and black opaque champleve enamels worked in floral and Greek key designs and is further enhanced with floral engraving at either end. Single chains issue from the clasp, then join to gold spheres before dividing into parallel double chains to which the slides are attached. The slides have geometric engraved decoration. The necklace is finished with an assymetrical pair of drops with foxtail tassels. The caps of the tassels have engraved decoration matching the slides. The necklace is hallmarked repeatedly with French “tete d’aigle” marks for 18K gold and with an unidentified maker’s mark. Origin: France, ca. 1860. Condition: excellent, a very small ding on the clasp. Size: 16-1/4” long; tassels drop 2-3/4” from the chain. Weight: 11.5 grams. |
