Gorgeous 2nd Empire 18K yellow gold and diamond brooch in the form of a pansy. The Empress Eugénie was a devoted follower of diamonds and set the style for delicate floral brooches of this type during the early part of her husband’s reign. The style is marked by an increased realism in the appearance of the blossom. The petals, leaves and the lower part of the stem are encrusted with rose-cut diamonds, while the blossom is centered by a 1/3-carat old mine cut diamond in a prong-setting. During this period, the gold was overlaid with silver to highlight the white color of diamonds. Many of the jewels from this period are dark and without much sparkle, but this piece has a really lively feel with terrific sparkle. The back is marked with the “tete d’aigle” guarantee for 18K gold and has an unidentified jeweler’s mark. Origin: France, ca. 1850. Condition: excellent, all original. Size: 1-1/2” x 13/16”. |
