A lovely and rare sterling silver lettuce fork in Gorham’s 1885 “#431” pattern. Head lettuce was a newly invented vegetable near the end of the Victorian era, and many silversmiths created special long forks to serve the leaves in the most elegant way possible. The handle is nicely decorated with oyster, clam and scallop shells, as well as fronds of seaweed, and is reminiscent of the exquisite “Narragansett” pattern. The tines are pierced and enhanced with bright-cut engraving. Gorham produced only a limited line in this pattern and it quite difficult to find. The back has complementary decoration and is stamped with Gorham’s older hallmark and the pattern number. Origin: America, ca. 1885. Condition: excellent, sharp detail, no monogram, no dings. Size: 9-1/4” long. Weight: 29.75 grams. |
