A fantastic late Victorian watch pin featuring a mythological griffin. This is, by far, the best griffin brooch we’ve ever seen. The entire surface is hand-chased to create realistic feathery, furry and scaly textures. The beast is cast very three-dimensionally for added detail. The top of his unfurled wing is accented with rose-cut diamonds set in silver and he stands on foliage likewise set with diamonds. He grasps a 4.0mm pearl in his jaws. The back retains the original watch hanger, pinstem and trombone clasp. The back is marked for 18K. Origin: Europe, possibly France, ca. 1890. Condition: mint. Size: 1-1/4” diameter.
