A wonderful Victorian 18K yellow gold watch fob featuring a double-sided lapis lazuli swivel fob surmounted by a gold lioness wrestling with a serpent. The lioness’s tail curls under to become one hinge for the swivel, while the snake’s tail forms the other. The seal stone is set in a gold collar delicately engraved in a foliate pattern. Since it is a fairly soft stone, the use of lapis as a fob seal is rather unusual. Both sides are engraved—one with a monogram and the other with a monogram surrounding an anchor. Both monograms have the same last initial, but different first initials, likely indicating that one side was engraved at a later date by whomever inherited the seal from its original owner. Tested and guaranteed 18K gold. Origin: European, ca. 1840. Condition: excellent, contemporary jump ring, no damage to stone, fine detail. Size: 1-1/2” x 1-1/8” (not including jump ring). Weight: 14.75 grams. |
