A wonderful late Victorian 14K yellow gold brooch in the form of a dragon. The scaly creature unfurls his feathered wings and rides on a ship-like vessel decorated in the Etruscan style. The dragon's traditional tail has been transformed into a foliate bouquet. His jaws clasp a prong-set old European cut diamond and his eye and wing are set with small rubies. Interestingly, the reverse side of the pin is completely covered with ornate engraved decoration--a most curious treatment since it is not visible when being worn. The pin retains its original pinstem and early safety clasp, marked "14K". Origin: America, ca. 1900. Condition: excellent, all original. Size: 1" x 1-3/8". Weight: 7.0 grams. |
