A very good Sumida Gawa pottery vase, the sides featuring appliqué decoration of four boys clambering around some sort of wooden structure over a body of water. The boys's faces are finely detailed. The top third of the vase has the classic dripped flambé glaze with nice coloring. The orange glaze on the bisque portion is vibrantly colored and in excellent condition. The base has the incised signature of master potter Inoue Ryosai. Origin: Japan, ca. 1890. Condition: excellent, no chips or cracks. Size: 9-1/4" tall. |
