A stunning Edwardian “stile guirlande” (“garland style”) brooch worked in 18K yellow gold and platinum, and set with diamonds and emeralds. The garland style was noted for its delicacy, with an emphasis on symmetrical floral and foliate motifs highlighted with geometric elements. Exhibiting all these characteristics, this brooch is an excellent example of the style. The rose-cut and old European-cut diamonds are bead-set in beautifully millgrained platinum, the elements joined with knife-edge connectors. The emeralds are set in yellow gold. The combination of diamonds and emeralds is somewhat unusual in French jewels of this period, and both are of superb quality. The diamonds have fine clarity and color and the emeralds have an intensely saturated color. The brooch suspends a 5.7mm pearl of very fine quality, which dangles freely to provide some movement. The construction of the back, with its ornately pierced gallery, demonstrates the high level of craftsmanship that went into this piece. The brooch has two pendant hooks so it can be worn from a delicate chain. The back is marked with French hallmarks, and also with the mark, “FO”, of an unidentified jeweler. Origin: France, ca. 1910.
