Victorian Sterling Schiebler Style Medallion Cufflinks
A nice pair of double-faced sterling silver cufflinks in the "Curio Medallion" style. This design, created by George Shiebler, was intended to give the impression that the pieces were actually ancient coins excavated from the ground. The rough edges and pitted surfaces suggested centuries' of wear and tear. Each face is decorated with the profile of a Grecian man wearing a headband. The headband is decorated with images of steeds pulling a chariot, possibly indicating that the profile was intended to represent Apollo, god of the sun, whose horses pulled the golden chariot of the sun across the sky. The backs are marked "Sterling" and have an unknown maker's mark.

Origin: America, ca. 1880. Condition: excellent, sharp detail. Size: 19/32" diameter. Weight: 9.25 grams.
