Victorians were fascinated by astronomical events such as the regular appearance of comets. Halley’s comet, in particular, created a world-wide sensation and inspired jewelry designs for many years. Comet jewelry, such as this brooch worked in 14K gold and turquoise, usually displays a rounded head attached to a tail. This piece is quite unusual, however, in that it interprets the traditional comet shape in the Etruscan Revival style. The micro-beaded and wirework decoration is of the finest quality. The gold surfaces are enhanced with the “bloomed” Russian finish. Tested and guaranteed 14K. Origin: America, ca. 1860. Condition: excellent, all original. Size: 2-1/8” long. Weight: 4.25 grams. |
