A magnificent early Victorian locket of carved elephant ivory. The carving is of such a level that the French city of Dieppe, renowned since the middle ages as a center of ivory carving, is the most likely origin. The workmanship is so perfect that when the cover is closed, the viewer cannot see that the piece is a locket. The hinge is completely concealed, and the only visible mechanical piece is a small gilt pin near the bottom that acts as a sort of latch to keep the cover closed. Many carved ivory pieces were pegged together from several different pieces of material, but this example is worked from a single, solid block of ivory. The carving of the flower stems is nearly paper thin and there is absolutely no damage. The ivory has gained a beautiful natural lustrous patina, darker on the back where it was in contact with skin. Origin: France, ca. 1830. Condition: excellent, no losses, no cracks. Size: 2-1/4" x 1-1/2" (exluding ivory jump ring). NOTE: This item cannot be shipped outside the U.S. |
