A wonderful Victorian pendant comprising a pair of small tiger's claws mounted in 21K yellow gold. The gold cap is adorned with a fringe of moveable spheres that matches the line beading that extends down the center of the mounting. A loop at either end of the mounting can be attached to a chain. Tiger claw jewelry became popular after Queen Victoria's coronation as Empress of India. Sometimes, these hunting trophies were taken back to England to be custom-mounted by English jewelers, but when the hunter was planning to remain in India for an indefinite period, the claws were often mounted by Indian goldsmiths (as in this example) and sent back to loved ones in England as souvenirs of great "colonial adventures". Tested and guaranteed 21K gold. Origin: India, ca. 1860. Condition: excellent, claws show normal age splitting, all original. Size: 1-5/8" x 1". Weight: 6.5 grams. NOTE: This item cannot be shipped outside the United States. |
