Elegant Art Nouveau 14K yellow gold brooch depicting the Greek goddess Pallas Athena. The design is worked in the "medallist" style more typical of French Art Nouveau pieces, but this piece is American. The artistry and workmanship of the design is first rate. Athena, goddess of wisdom, horses, olives and patroness of Athens. She is shown with her attributes of helmet and olive branches. The edges are studded with prong-set seed pearls and the gold surface is enhanced with the slightly matte "Russian finish" sometimes seen in high-quality Art Nouveau pieces. The back retains the original watch hook, pinstem and swivel bale, and is marked "14K". Origin: America, ca. 1900. Condition: excellent, very sharp detail. Size: 1-1/8" diameter. Weight: 6.0 grams. |
