A fine example of the extremely rare Art Deco "Thirst Extinguisher" cocktail shaker sold by the luxury retailer Asprey & Co. in 1932. The shaker, in the form of an old-fashioned fire extinguisher, features a shield-shaped plaque reading “The Thirst Extinguisher/Instructions For Filling” with a downward-pointing arrow. The bottom of the shaker is finished with a moveable sleeve engraved with the recipes for eight different classic cocktails. The sleeve can be rotated to line up with the arrow in the shield, providing the user with a handy recipe reference, as well as a reminder of the shaker’s contents. Though retailed by Asprey, these shakers were actually made by John Turton & Co. of Sheffield, England. The base is stamped with Turton’s mark. The shaker is very finely constructed and is plated to the highest standard. This is among the rarest of all figural cocktail shakers and belongs in only the top-level collection. Origin: England, ca. 1920. Condition: excellent, no dings, no plating loss. Size: 15” tall. |
