A very good multigem “Sputnik” ring in the style of H Stern. Stern, the world’s largest dealer in colored gemstones, created this design in the 1950s to showcase the wonderful array of colored gemstones available in the Brazilian mines. Amethysts, aquamarines, citrines, garnets, and green and pink tourmalines are collet-set above the yellow gold dome (this ring also includes an unusual and very pretty deep blue tourmaline). The resulting appearance was considered very modern and was popularly named after the early Russian space satellite “Sputnik”. Each ring has a unique look depending upon the particular selection and arrangement of the gems. This example includes an unusual and very pretty deep blue tourmaline that we have never seen in a Sputnik piece. Tested and guaranteed 18K. Origin: Brazil, ca. 1960. Condition: excellent. Finger Size: 9. Size: 29/32” diameter. Weight: 6.1 grams. Approximate Total Gemstone Weight: tourmaline, 1.65 cts; garnet, 1.23 cts; citrine, 1.16 cts; amethyst, 1.16 cts; aquamarine, .87 ct. |
