A very pretty late Victorian 14K yellow gold brooch in the Art Nouveau taste. The pin features a pansy blossom beautifully enameled in shades of violet, pink and cream and centered with a prong-set, old mine cut round diamond. The pansy is enclosed within a horseshoe frame set with seed pearls. In the Victorian language of flowers, the pansy represented the sentiment “thoughtfulness” or “remembrance”, while the horseshoe symbolized “good luck”. While small enameled pins were often given as love tokens, an example such as this was probably meant as a going away present. The enameling is finely done, the pearls have excellent luster and color, and the diamond is of very good quality, estimated at H color, VS clarity. The back of the pin is stamped “14K” and retains the original pinstem, clasp, and folding bail that allows the piece to be worn as either a brooch or pendant. Origin: America (probably Newark), ca. 1900. Condition: excellent, no enamel damage, all original. Size: 3/4" x 7/8” (excluding bail). Weight: 4.0 grams. Approximate Diamond Weight: .05 carat. |
