A marvelous 19th century French 18K yellow gold double locket, the covers worked in carved rock crystal and lapis lazuli. The front cover features a plaque of rock crystal with lapidary cutting at the edges and tiny intaglio engraved flowers across the face. The other side features a large oval plaque of lapis lazuli, very nicely marked with bits of sparkling pyrite. Both stones are set in a chased gold border engraved with star designs. The interior of the locket has a secondary cover, so the locket can accomodate several different portraits, or perhaps a lock of hair in addition to a portrait. Either the clear or blue side can be worn on the outside. The bail is marked with French "tete d'aigle hallmarks" for 18K gold, and have an unidentified maker's mark. Origin: France, ca. 1860. Condition: excellent, all original. Size: 1" x 7/8" (excluding bail). Weight: 8.9 grams. |
