A very good pendant comprising a matched pair of tiger’s claws mounted in 18K yellow gold. The mounting is nicely engraved in foliate motif and has a shield-shaped reserve at the center top which was intended to be monogrammed. The edges of the mounting are scalloped and the points end in beads. Indian decorative arts became popular after Queen Victoria’s proclamation as Empress of India and tiger’s claws, in particular, were kept as souvenirs by British big game hunters. Sometimes the claws were set into jewelry in India, but the style and quality of workmanship in this pendant indicates that the claws were mounted in England (or possibly America). Tested and guaranteed 18K. Origin: England or America, ca. 1870. Condition: excellent, all original, no monogram. Size: 2-1/2” x 1-1/16”. Weight: 13.5 grams. |
