A stunning 14K white gold filigree ring featuring rose and yellow gold appliques enclosing a stunning 7.09 ct oval amethyst. The gemstone has the distinctive lilac-pink tones of stones from Brazil called “rose de France,” but with very strong saturation that sets this particular stone apart. While the crown of the ring is of distinctly Art Nouveau style, the shank—enhanced at the shoulders with rose and yellow gold—has a more angular Art Deco feel. The interior of the ring is stamped “BL 14K.”

An amazing 18K gold and enamel locket made in celebration of Switzerland’s sexcentennial (600th anniversary) celebration in 1891. Made as either a commissioned jewel for the wife of a government dignitary or as a “Grand Tour” souvenir, this locket is likely a unique piece. The front cover is worked in Swiss enamels depicting eleven of the Swiss cantons surrounded a center reserve featuring the coat of arms of the Swiss Confederation. The reverse is decorated with the coats of arms of the remaining eleven cantons that existed at the time of the celebration surrounded a bouquet of forget-me-nots. The flower is often used to symbolize the message “think of me” in Victorian jewelry, but in this case, also as a reminder that they grow abundantly in Switzerland’s alpine meadows. The locket’s edges are finished in a black enamel trail of ivy leaves and vines. Exposed gold surfaces are finished with a stippled texture. The locket’s interior retains the original frames, glass covers and Kelly green silk lining. The ornately pierced jump ring is also original. Tested and guaranteed 18K.

A very unusual Art Nouveau 14K gold brooch in the form of a puffed heart clasped by a winged dragon. The heart is enhanced with repousse floral decoration and is centered with a seed pearl. The griffin clasps a second seed pearl in its jaws. Griffins were often used in jewelry to represent the concept of “protection.” When paired with a heart, the meaning could be conceived as “protecting love.” The back retains the original watch hook, and the clasp appears to be a replacement. The pin could easily be converted for wear as a pendant with the addition of a loop at the tip of each wing. Tested and guaranteed 14K.

A beautiful late Retro bracelet worked in 14K yellow gold from the esteemed German jeweler Lotos. Founded in Pforzheim in 1872, the house focused entirely on fine jewelry until the late 1950s when it began making insanely expensive eyeglasses frames in precious metals and set with gemstones. This bracelet dates to the years just after World War II while the company was still focused on fine jewelry. The simple design features contemporary open links studded with perfectly matched emerald cut green tourmalines of exceptional color and strong dichroism (the presence of two distinct shades of green in the same stone when viewed from different angles). The tourmalines each weight just over 2 carats. The hidden clasp is stamped “585” for 14K and is signed “LOTOS.”

A classic Retro 18K gold and platinum ring with a special twist—the use of natural “pierres de famille” instead of synthetic stones in modern cuts. The crown of the ring is centered with a good rose cut diamond of about .62 carat (with a face-up appearance of about 1.5 carats) flanked on either side by a graduated pair of cushion cut blue sapphires, and bordered on the outer edges with bands of old mine and old European cut diamonds. The sides of the crown are worked with a pierced gallery. Many Retro jewels were created during the World War II years, hence the frequent use of synthetic gemstones. This ring, however, features natural stones that were repurposed from the owner’s old jewels inherited from family into something more fashionable. The shank is stamped with French 18K gold and platinum hallmarks.

An elegant 18K yellow gold brooch featuring an image of the water nymph Daphne, who was pursued by the sun god Apollo. His affections were not returned by Daphne and to save her from falling into his arms, Daphne’s father transformed her into a laurel tree. She was so impressed by the genuineness of his mourning, that the Daphne bowed her limbs and allowed Apollo to pluck laurel leaves which he fashioned in his own crown. Here, Daphne is shown wearing a bandeau of old European cut diamonds and with her head surrounded by arches of laurel. The wavy treatment of her flowing hair in the background is suggestive of her water origins. This medallion is almost certainly the work of sculptor Emile-Séraphin Vernier. Most jewels based on Vernier’s designs were made in France, but his designs were also licensed to American jewelers who created pieces in 14K gold. American examples such as this one typically have much heavier weight than their French counterparts. The back retains the original watch hook and pinstem with a replaced clasp. A bail for wear as a pendant could easily be added at the top. The back is also engraved “E.H.S. – S.B.H. 1925.” We believe the brooch is likely a about a decade older, probably around 1910 and that the engraving was when given as later gift. Tested and guaranteed 18K.

An elegant Art Nouveau necklace featuring a central pendant hanging from a single chysoprase station that in turn hands between two more ornate shield-shaped stations set with chrysoprase cabochons. The central pendant features an oval chrysoprase cabochon enclosed in gold whiplash curves and accented with old mine cut diamonds. The gold surfaces are beautifully enhanced with a snakeskin texture. The pendant also originally had a pinstem so it could be removed from the chain and worn as a brooch. The original hallmark was most likely on the pinstem or its clasp. Given the sophistication of the design and the quality of the workmanship, the necklace is certainly the product of one of the better American makers of the early 20th century. An early 20th century first standard (950/100 pure) silver tastevin decorated in the traditional Burgundian style with a coiled snake handle and appliques depicting vines of grapes and foliage along the sides. Applique decoration is uncommon, and this is a particularly nice example. The bowl is decorated with elongated cupules along one side for use in judging white wines and with large recessed cupules and raised perles for reds. Snake handles are thought to have represented the Garden of Eden and the temptations brought on by wine. An extraordinary Victorian 18K gold hinged bangle bracelet belonging to the eldest daughter of the 9th Duke of Devonshire, Lady Maud Louisa Emma Cavendish, likely custom-made around between 1912-14 to celebrate her debut in society. Lady Maud married in 1917, so the bracelet is definitely prior to that event. The bracelet is entirely worked in a continuous panel of hand sawn foliage, flowers, grapes, and spiky seed pods. The front of the bracelet features the Cavendish coat of arms with three stags’ heads caboshed surmounted by a knight’s helmet barred. The back of the bracelet featured an “M" monogram so intricately worked into the design that it is difficult to see at first. The bracelet is heavy but retains an overall feeling of delicacy and lightness due to the extensive openwork of the design. The tongue of the clasp bears the hallmark of Henri Vever, arguably one of the two or three most important French jewelers of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The hallmark was registered in 1912, not long after the publication of Vever’s authoritative book on the history of French jewelry, La Bijouterie Francaise au XIXe Siècle. By 1912, Vever was well into his Art Nouveau period, but in many circles, certainly those in which the Duke’s family traveled, the Art Nouveau style was considered perhaps a little too risqué for an unmarried young lady. The bracelet is presented in its original velvet- and silk-liked fitted case.

French Art Nouveau 18K Gold & Diamond van der Straeten LA GAIETE Pendant A lovely French 18K gold, platinum and diamond Art Nouveau pendant featuring a young woman in flowing garments. The design “La Gaieté” (“the merry one”) was created by the famed Belgian sculptor George van der Straeten in 1900. Many such designs were adapted for jewelry, but van der Straeten’s images are very uncommon. The pendant is worked in an asymmetrical form bordered with rose cut diamonds set in platinum. The lady also wears a choker of rose cut diamonds. The piece originally had a pinstem and clasp that was removed at some point, but the two pendant loops appear to be original and are partially hallmarked with French 18K marks. The medallion is signed “G. van der Straeten” on the front.

An outstanding sterling silver centerpiece basket by Gorham. The sides and handle are decorated with extremely ornate bright-cut engraving in a swirling foliate pattern. The motif is repeated to great effect on the gilt feet that raise up the basket. The intersections of the handle and feet are adorned with a classical lion head and the outer surfaces throughout are finished with an acid-etched matte texture. The interior and the reeded decoration along the rims are finished with bright gilding that contrasts beautifully with the outer surfaces. This centerpiece is an excellent example of Gorham’s work for an elite market around the time of the American Centennial. The bottom is stamped with Gorham’s hallmark and the date mark for 1871, and bears the retail location mark for Gorham’s store at Union Square in New York City.

A stunning bracelet from Van Cleef & Arpels’ “Twist” line launched in 1962. Van Cleef’s jewels of that period took on a new lightness of mood from those of the previous decade. Color and a sense of movement became ever more important. The “Twist” bracelet matches flexible gold mesh with gold beads along the edge, cultured cultured pearls and coral beads to create a casual yet stately jewel that looks at home with jeans or a gown. The ingenious clasp is as small as possible to preserve the effect of a single torsade encircling the wrist. The Twist line was made with coral, lapis and onyx, and in addition to bracelets, included necklaces and clip earrings. The bracelet is fully marked with French 18K gold stamps and is stamped with the serial number 14.491 and “V.C.A. 62.” There is also the master goldsmith’s mark for Roger Stoffel of Stoffel et Cie, a workshop that created jewels for Van Cleef, Cartier, and Jean Schlumberger in the 1960s.

An example of the early 20th century French silversmith Marc Parrod’s interpretation of a classic 18th century tastevin. Most of Parrod’s tastevins used a serpent handle, but this example has a tab handle engraved with a cluster of grapes inside a heart and the legend “Le bon vin rejouit le Coeur” (“Good wine gladdens the heart.”) The bowl is enhanced with repousse decoration of heavy grape clusters, vines and leaves along the sides. The edge of the bottom retains the raised “perles” used to reflect light into the wine to better show its color, but the hammered bottom is an uncommon Parrod treatment in a more 17th century style. Parrod was well known for his fantasy tastevins based on ancient designs and sometimes even engraved the name of a supposed original owner and a suitable year. In this case, the year was 1821, the city was Beaune in the Burgundy region, and the owner was Michelot (“little Michael”). The tastevin is fully marked with Parrod’s hallmarks and with French 1st standard (950/1000 pure) silver marks.

A very rare pair of Victorian 14K gold bean-back cufflinks, the round faces depicting a young man and woman in Renaissance dress. The face with the man is marked “Romeo” near the border and the lady is marked “Juliette.” Note the French spelling of her name. These same medals occasionally appear in French jewels of the period. Lacking very many good Art Nouveau designers here, American designers sometimes commissioned Parisian jewelers to make certain elements such as the faces of these cufflinks that were later assembled in the U.S. as completed piece of jewelry. At others times, they simply copied the French version. The sharpness in the design, including the lightly stippled background texture, confirms that the faces were made by the original artist in Paris. The connectors are marked with Bippart, Griscom & Osborne’s 14K hallmark.
